Nice strong aluminum alloy case body, small and compact and feels good in the hand. A cool bit: the lanyard is the USB C cable with the ends locked in a clasp. I’m not really IT inclined, so I had to get the instructions off the net. I have to access it via “Files” directory for a chosen pic, file and such. After that, it’s like another external SSD. snick-snick.

Small and fast

This is a little SSD enclosure with a USB-C port. There are no vents or controls or switches or external power - just the USB-C port and a LED activity light. It's about 3in tall x 1.5in wide and .5in thick. The grey part is aluminum and then the front and back edges are black plastic. It's very similar to some of the SSD enclosures you can get where you supply the SSD (with a tray sliding out for you to put in it, then sliding into the main body), only you can't open this one (there's no latch or pressure switch that opens it). The USB-C cable it comes with has a built-in adapter for USB-A on one end (so you can use it with either type of USB port). There is no separate power cord - just the one. USB-A vs C doesn't make any difference in the drive speeds - bandwidth for both is much higher than the drive inside can handle, so you'll get the same performance from either (more detail below). It worked for me with my phone, laptop, and a few desktops I tried. The drive comes formatted ExFAT, so it supports 4GB+ files and should work with just about any device (not Windows-only like NTFS drives or only files below 4GB like FAT32). I compared this against a WD 512GB portable SSD from some 4-5 years ago. The WD is wider and about the same height, but then is thinner than this one. After filling this with files in the 6-8GB range I copied everything off to the other SSD and then back to this one, as well as to/from the drives to the host computer, and with USB-C/A to see if there was a difference. For this drive I was able to get consistent 350MB/s read speeds (from this to the host or other drive) over the entire timeframe of emptying the drive - no drops. The other drive running a similar test was more in the 450-500MB/s range (so already this isn't the fastest drive). In write testing I was able to get 350MB/s for some 10-15 seconds (some 3-5GB usually) and then it would throttle down to 20-40MB/s. It would stay at this lower speed for the remainder of the transfer. By comparison the WD one could do roughly 450-500MB/s writes consistently as well (though it got much warmer than this - to where it was almost too hot to touch). During sustained heavy reads or writes this drive would be warm to the touch - not hot or painful to the touch, but warm (like the bottom of a laptop or back of a phone after taxing them for a while). I did test whether the write speed throttling was thermal in nature by spraying this with inverted canned air (to get the cold fluid on the casing). After a second or two of spray the metal case was quite chilled (almost frostbite-level, trying to stick to my fingers). Despite this there was no perceptible improvement in transfer speeds. It warmed up again a couple minutes later (slower than I expected) and speeds were still unchanged. This all tells me that it wasn't throttling due to heat, but due to using a low-end SSD (particularly true if the mid-range portable one I'm comparing this to from some 4-5 years ago was faster by that much). I also tried switching from USB-A to straight USB-C and got identical results - there is no difference with this drive in the transfer speeds. The interface bandwidth is higher than either drive on write or read (the SSD inside either of them becomes the choke point), so it doesn't make a difference. Overall the performance for this one is roughly similar to some WD "Green" 120GB SSDs I have from 2016-17 - not great, but better than HDDs (and being smaller and using less power, so there are still plenty of advantages). This will be good if you're wanting to store media or such to play on a phone or external device. It could also be good for smaller file transfers back and forth - just be aware it's not going to move quickly if you're copying a lot to this drive. It could also be good for something like a TrueNAS boot drive. All in all, it's a good little drive for basic use... I just wouldn't use it where you need speed (which is ironic, since that's usually why you'd get an SSD in the first place...) I've knocked a star off for the cumulative effects of: -Quick throttling/slow write speeds -Difficult to understand manual (though thankfully it's plug-and-play so you don't need it much) -Slight difference in grey between the grey case and the warmer brown-grey of the USB cable -Heavily promoting fast USB speeds where the choke point is the drive inside the unit For the price it's still not bad.

This thing is very fast! I moved over 100 megabytes onto it and done in less than a heartbeat. No really, I timed it. My heartbeat is slower. Nominally? you're going to get a bit less than 512 GB - I didn't ding it for this because industry practice does this with everything. It's closer to 470? give or take. However this is plenty for me, and especially so compact! I love that the case doesn't just seem sturdy too - it looks good doing it. Sleek, professional, and with the lanyard cable this is something I could totally see hanging off the side of my ESD work bag. Except, I loathe losing it in my office and will likely keep it at my home instead. I'm very satisfied with this, especially as my old back-up external is nice but is almost all taken up by well, back-ups! with this I can swap humongous files way easier - ISO, EXE, and datasets too! And I love how portable it is. I can't think of a single issue with it and even price for performance seems reasonable to me.

I was recently on a vacation in the UK, and while over there, I was warned that my Google photo drive was full. And instead of paying them more money to expand that storage, I figured I would just delete the photos in my google drive and then back up my photos from my phone at a later date. Luckily for me, I had this on me, and simply backed up my photos onto this SSD via the USB-C port on my phone. And THANK GOD that I had this, because unbeknownst to me, my phone does not simply back items up to Google, it "syncs" with it. So ALL of the photos that i had deleted to make room on my google drive, were also deleted from my phone at the same time. This was over 2 years worth of photos that I would have lost if not for having been able to back them up to this SSD drive. The drive is small, an easily carried with you in a backpack or purse (it's pocket sized as well, but you'd need to travel with the USB-C cable as well). It works with both Android and iPhones (but you'd need an adapter for lightening port, unless you have a newer iPhone that uses USB-C). Backing up the entirety of my phones pictures and videos only took a few minutes. I would HIGHLY recommend having this product and taking it with you if you don't have a huge Cloud storage service.

Comes pre-formatted as exFAT with 476.91GB addressable and includes a 10gbps USBC cable (one end has a USBA adapter if needed). On 10GB files without buffering (that is, the drive speed rather than the speed with using computer's paging file), I get a 40-50MB/s averaged write speed, and consistent 410MB/s read speed. In other words, you should expect it to take at least 3 hours (likely over 4) to fill the drive as formatted, and a bit under 20 minutes to copy it all somewhere else (assuming destination is at least as fast as this USB drive). Drive cache looks to be 2-4GB; so first 2-4GB will write at ~330MB/s, then ~35MB/s after. With the drive fille 90% full and with 10GB unbuffered write tests again, write speeds declined to 35-40MB/s, while read speeds declined to 380-390 MB/s. Speeds may have been affected here by thermals; despite having a small fan inside, the case got quite hot to the touch in testing. Overall, I would say this is fine for: -Redundant computer/phone backup option (using differential images, not full/fresh images each time) -Ventoy bootloader -Write-once, read-many library (e.g. videos, ebooks, where it's all populated once and then mostly just read from for the rest of its life) -Storing images/video from phone/tablet It would not be good for: -Full/fresh PC backups -Frequently moving videos between computers (e.g. in video production) -Boot drive An NVMe drive in a USB enclosure will be faster if you have a fast USBC port to support it, but it will also be substantially more expensive; for the price ($46 for 512GB version at time of review), I think this is a good product.
