A great set of speakers, but wait for a discount, not worth $278
I bought these at $168 during OCT prime and not the $278 listed (or $199 they are right now as of this review a few days after sale ) My father was an audiophile for decades, along with being a mechanic. I learned a lot of my life from him about quality audio components, but i suck at writing detailed reviews in order to persuade people to buy a product. I will start by saying, i don't know everything. I know a little, or enough, about many things. Many times, i do lots of research and become very well informed on the products i intend to buy. I strive for Quality, while also lookin for value. CHEAP , doesn't mean "Bad". nor does "Expensive" mean the best there is. With that said, these SS-CS5M2 bookshelf speakers are for my PC. I've been rocking Logitech Z-5300 5.1 for nearly 22 years. I bought them brand new. several years ago i ditched the rear channels (speakers still work) and just maintained 3.1 setup. THey sound good for gaming and movies, but i finally wanted something better. I've had much better for my home cinema setup, so i never bothered with my pc, but it's time to retire these logitech. After many YT video reviews, i enjoyed the YT channel ChepAudioMan the most. With another reviewer that gave more in-depth technical analysis and i chose these speakers. As well as the CS8M2 Center channel to be paired with my 13 year old Sony STR-DH520 AVR. After i got these setup and my AVR setup the way i like, WOW ! I know how "bad" my logitech were going to be compared to these, but compared to my theater system, just wow. Strengths Clarity & Detail in Mid/Highs Thanks to the tweeter + super tweeter arrangement, vocals, acoustic guitars, cymbals, and other high-frequency detail tend to come through quite cleanly. The โextraโ super tweeter helps extend the sense of air and sparkle without sounding artificially bright (at least in well-treated rooms). In many test tracks, fine details in cymbal overtones and string harmonics were audible. Wide Soundstage / Dispersion Because of the super tweeter and driver layout, the SS-CS5M2 tends to have a broad โsweet spotโ and a more open โsoundstageโ feel than many conventional small bookshelf speakers. Off-axis listening (i.e. not perfectly centered) remains usable. Good Build & Design for the Price The cabinets feel solid for their class, with good internal bracing. Aesthetically, they are understated and likely to blend into many setups without being too flashy. Decent Mid-Bass for Small Rooms / Paired with Sub In smaller rooms (say 10 ร 12 ft, or smaller), the woofer and cabinet do a respectable job providing musical low frequencies (bass to low-mid) โ though not earth-shaking. For many listeners, a subwoofer will fill in whatโs missing below ~ 50โ60 Hz. Trade-offs & Limitations Bass Limitations While the 5.12โณ woofer is competent, in larger rooms or for bass-heavy genres (electronic, hip-hop, orchestral weight) the speakers wonโt deliver deep, room-shaking bass. The reliance on a separate subwoofer becomes more of a necessity in many use cases. Potential for Brightness / Fatigue Because of the super tweeter and three-way design, some listeners report the highs being a bit โbrightโ or forward, especially with more aggressive recordings. If your source / amplification is on the bright side, this could accentuate sibilance or cymbal harshness. (Some real-world users note this โbright house soundโ tendency in Sonyโs speaker heritage.) Audio Science Review Sensitivity / Power Needs These are not ultra-sensitive โloud with little powerโ speakers. To get decent dynamic range and headroom, youโll benefit from a quality amplifier that can deliver clean power, especially if you push them. Room & Placement Sensitivity As with many small / compact speakers, performance depends heavily on placement, room acoustics, and speaker stands. Rear port means youโll want some space behind them (distance from wall) to avoid port interference or โboomyโ lows. Value & Verdict For what Sony is charging, the SS-CS5M2 offers impressive bang for the buck. The fact that youโre getting a 3-way design, a super tweeter for extended treble, and solid construction in this price tier is notable. Many competing bookshelf speakers in the same range lean toward simpler 2-way designs. If you match them with a good amplifier, manage room placement carefully, and pair them sensibly (especially with a subwoofer), they can deliver a lively, engaging, and detailed audio experience that far exceeds what many expect from โbudget / entry-levelโ speakers. However, they are not miracle workers. If you need deep extension or intend to drive them very loudly in a large hall, their limitations will show. Also, if you are super sensitive to brightness, depending on your source gear you might find them a bit forward in the top end. Overall: A strong recommendation in their class โ for many listeners, these could be โspeakers you get and keep,โ especially if you build around their strengths.

On par with much more expensive ones.
Looked at these for a while after seeing a bunch of reviews and comparisons on YouTube. Cheapaudioman , in a way, lauded these as a standard to go by as one of the best inexpensive โbookshelf โ speakers. I wasnโt too sure if Iโd like the look of them , but the fit / finish is actually really nice which is kind of a shame because I have them in my wood shop getting dusty and possibly beat up. Hence the reason I didnโt want to spend hundreds on speakers. My shop is in a U shape loaded with equipment and regardless of speaker, sound isnโt studio quality of course. Theyโre placed about 7 feet apart, eye level, pointing down the long side of the room and dispersion of detail is so good with these things. Theyโre much more natural sounding than the Klipch theyโve replaced. Like the Klipchs, bass is supplemented with just a 10 inch cheap Polk sub and volume levels are more than plenty. Iโd have no regrets using these for my surrounds and even use for the mains in my home theater room. As a top tier Polk fanboy, Iโm impressed with these.

Good speakers
I use these in my office to listen to music while Iโm working. They are excellent for that purpose. They sound more musical than computer a typical computer speakers and they donโt sound as bland as my studio monitors. I havenโt tried them with in my music room for critical listening. They are great speakers for the price I paid.

Surprising performance and range for a small lightweight passive, and a great value.
No disagreement with all the other reviews. Probably not an end-all solution for a home theater setup or a large room, but it's a nice set for the price. There are certainly bigger and more costly options out there but I picked these up for a computer desk mostly because they offer a three-way component setup in a narrow footprint that doesn't take up much space. Plus, they go on sale a lot. Given the low weight and compact size, they punch above their weight and there's no distortion even when you start pushing them hard. I'm inclined to say you won't be tricked into thinking you've got a subwoofer, but that little bottom woofer definitely can throw enough air to pinch hit for a sub, and the three-way setup keeps them pretty crisp even while they're throwing a lot of bass. Despite the size, they've got respectable frequency range with clear vocals and sharp detail. I've had bigger bookshelf passives that are more powerful, but size and power aren't really necessary when you're only two or three feet away from them on a desk, you honestly just want more high-end clarity and less boominess. I wanted a "mini floorstanding speakers right on the desk" setup and these fit the bill, and they have a lot of positive sentiment even from hardcore audiophiles. They are ported in the rear, which is a good call to help with punchy bass response in a small speaker, and that port needs room to breathe, so despite being bookshelf speakers just remember that they shouldn't be placed too close to a backing wall. You can do that with a sealed cabinet, but blocking the rear port on these will add boundary gain which will exaggerate low frequencies (not in a good way) and smear transients. Always leave a few inches in back and the bass output will stay controlled and won't get too muddy. They do come with some very basic adhesive feet, but they're just flat rubber. I'd recommend getting some thicker (non-flat) silicone isolation feet with a smaller contact point. If you just sit the speakers flat onto a solid surface like a desk, table, or shelf, you'll get boundary coupling that swallows up the low end frequencies, muffling and flattening the sound, especially when you've got light cabinets like these that only weigh nine pounds. Heavier speakers can get away with this somewhat because they resonate less, but lighter speakers are susceptible to that if it's just one flat surface against another. If you put acoustic feet on them and make sure they're well isolated from all flat surfaces, I don't think you'll be disappointed with how present and robust these small speakers sound even without a sub.

Very good detail sound budget speaker
Wait for a sale on these. And then if you need a desktop or garage speaker, they are pretty nice. I needed some more detail in my old 1980's Sears/LXI/Fisher towers in my garage, powered by a Denon receiver. Bought them, was impressed with the detailed sound. The receiver had A/B speakers switch, so I am running both the old stuff and these SSCS-5's. Bought some 0.4 inch thick self-adhesive sound-proofing foam off of Amazon, pulled the woofer out, and added as much insulation as I could. I'm happy, at the sale price! They are fine without the insulation, very detailed. But, I like to tinker and make things better. Wait for Black Friday, or whatever. I would say... $155 tp $180, not a bad purchase for HiFi on a budget. I get away with no subwoofer because the old Sears speakers have a 10-inch woofer. But the old speakers needed some new hifi capability. And then I read where if you have an older receiver, the DAC's are probably outdated. So, I added a SMSL D1 DAC, then fed that into the older Denon receiver. Yep, better sound yet. Fun hobby. My sources are Wiim Ultra in the living room, Wiim Mini's everywhere else. I am still learning, but dang, feed a Wiim mini into a SMSL DAC, SU-1 or D1, wow. Then into your amp, whatever you have. Last but not least, test with high quality recordings on Spotify, Tidal, whatever. Some recordings are not that good, even on Lossless. Find a good one, and start fine tuning. Oh, and the three biggest reasons to get some Wiim Mini's are.... high quality stream, optical out to your DAC of choice, and perfect synchronization with the other four systems in your residence (living room, bedroom, basement, garage, in my case....). No matter where you are in the residence, the music is in sync.

aI like these
Already the best speakers I have. Got these off of some internet reviews, and they were on point, they sound great. Even though they are not high end they are way more speaker than I need. I've been listening to jazz for the past two days non stop, these speakers are bringing out things i have not heard before. If you are looking for a great set of budget speaker you found them.

Clear and Detailed Sound
I use these speakers with a Douk T6 Pro amplifier, and Iโm very happy with how they sound. The sound is clear and detailed, and they work very well for my setup. They are also well-built and feel like a quality product. Overall, I really enjoy listening to music with these speakers.

Awsome speakers
Awsome speakers at this price. The only issue is hard to find an ampifier within the appropriate price range to be able to fully drive these speakers.
