Good Coffee
This coffee is a good coffee. My family and I like this coffee; it has an enjoyable flavor that isn’t too strong or acidic. We really enjoy it and would recommend it. It’s a little bit on the expensive side because of being a specialty brand but is worth it especially as a treat to include in a rotation with other less expensive brands.

If You’re Still Buying Grocery Store Beans, We Need to Talk
Stumptown Hair Bender is not “coffee.” It is structure. It is architecture. It is a calibrated sensory event. I’ve been through the phase. The “this is fine” supermarket beans. The oily, over-roasted charcoal disguised as “bold.” The pre-ground tragedy that tastes like regret and cardboard. Hair Bender is none of that. First: the aroma upon opening the bag. Dense. Layered. Cocoa, citrus oil, faint caramelized sugar. Not the flat, ashy blast of dark roast mediocrity. This is aromatic complexity. You inhale and immediately realize your grinder has a purpose again. The beans themselves? Even roast. No scorched oil slick sheen. No inconsistent mottling. Proper development without tipping into bitterness. Whoever roasted this batch understood heat curves and didn’t just set it and pray. Dial it properly. (Please don’t insult it with a blade grinder.) Medium-fine for pour-over, 18g in, 36g out for espresso in 28–30 seconds. Respect the ratio. Respect the bean. The first sip delivers structured chocolate and balanced acidity — not sour, not sharp, not confused. The citrus is integrated, not screaming. The sweetness is clean, not syrupy. The finish lingers without turning bitter or drying out the palate like poorly extracted nonsense. Milk drinks? Elevated. Straight espresso? Composed. Pour-over? Articulate. If your coffee tastes “fine,” it’s not fine. You’ve just normalized mediocrity. Hair Bender reminds you what calibration tastes like. Is it precious? Yes. Does it deserve to be? Also yes. If you’re not weighing your dose and timing your extraction, maybe sit this one out.

Decent Coffee
Read an article that gave this coffee high marks so decided to try it. Overall I am not disappointed with the flavor, but definitely not my favorite. Flavor is too mild for my taste. I tried adding more, but never could get it up to my standards for a good cup of coffee. If you like a very mild flavor this might be for you, but definitely not for me.

Not for espresso?
Bought this "expensive" bean to use for espresso in my super auto espresso machine. In reviews online I saw where people use Stumptown Hairbender for espresso. The beans are small and dry so work perfectly for an auto machine. Unfortunantely the taste and freshness was not what I was hoping for. This bean is obviously a "light roast" coffee bean and, in my opinion, not robust enough to give most people the espresso taste they are expecting. Tried it as an Americano and my first taste made me think of Sanka(SEE UPDATE BELOW) so this bean isn't for me. Perhaps in a manual machine where you can increase the dose size and extacton time it would taste better. Larger dose size brings up cost again. 12 ounces at $15 dollars I'm expecting to be wowed by the taste. As far as freshness goes I guess I'm not sure how to rate it. This coffee bag had both the roast date , January, and expiration date, April 29 so it is close to expired. Although, most coffee brands only give you a "use before" date so no way of even knowing when it was roasted so perhaps this coffee was as fresh as other brands. There are many less expensive options for a better tasting shot of espresso out there....UPDATE; This coffee bean makes a good tasting Amercano and milk drinks if you use 2 to 2 1/2 times the espresso you normlly would....still expensive.
