I'll start with the fact that the lens wasn't for me, but I'm still leaving a 5* review for it. The lens is perfectly sharp wide open for 24Mp cameras - not sure about higher-mp models like Z7/8/9, but for Z5/Z6 series it's more than sharp enough wide open. The copy that I got from Amazon was also well-centered, and I'm picky about these things. AF is super fast, quiet, and precise in all modes for both photo and video, not much else to add. The main thing that you might not be happy about is huge coma - light sources that are close to the edge of the frame are rendered like "bird wings" for lack of a better comparison. This effectively prevents the use of this lens as an astrophoto or a night landscape lens. Bokeh looks like more of an old-school, somewhat nervous, with a slight outlining in bokeh balls. Not exactly a "vintage" effect, but in some scenarios it might look interesting. I also didn't like that the plastic focusing ring has some room to squeeze it; it's a tiny bit wider than the lens barrel, and it feels a bit cheap. I tried a few copies in brick and mortar stores around, and they're all the same - they had to cut costs somewhere. But it's still a very cheap offering for a 1st party lens with absolutely acceptable sharpness and a perfectly good daily runner if you're not in some specialty genre I mentioned above. There's simply nothing comparable in other systems except for Canon 45/1.2, but that's a one terrible lens.

I’ve been waiting for Nikon to release a lens like this. A more affordable fast 50 with autofocus. The image quality still blows me away and is noticeable better than any of my vintage lenses including the famed and desirable Nikon 58mm 1.2 Noct. My only gripe is the that autofocus speed isn’t as fast as some of my S lenses like the 24-70 2.8 and the 20mm f1.8. Which is a small shame as I’ve tried to take pics of Willy dogs and had far less hits than on some other lenses. Still for the price, it’s pretty smal, compact, and light for a Z mount lens. The image quality is surprisingly good. Obviously probably not the most optically perfect lens but still impressive . It focuses fast enough for most situations. And the price makes this a very easy buy if you want a fun fast 50mm on Z mount

This is a superb lens with a large aperture, but still reasonably priced. Optical qualities are outstanding, never matched by a zoom-lens, but, yes, you will have to move a bit more.
