Great game, adapted very well from the video game. Major nostalgia appeal!
I'm really torn between 4 and 5 stars. I think 4.5 is probably right if that were an option. The developers did such a great job of adapting this from the videogame, often in very creative ways. The game would be way too complex otherwise. So this is really a more simplified version off the videogame version. For example, instead of a multitude of resources, there are only 3 to manage (gold, stone, and crystals). Instead of a seperate building being built for each army unit, troops are broken into 3 levels (bronze, silver, and gold) and each building can allow you to recruit one level (there are also azure level netural units in the game). Troops can still be upgraded, but it is called "reinforced" in the board game version. Abilities that you would normally get from upgading your character's level in the video game exist in the board game version, but aren't permanent. Instead they are cards, and when they come into your hand, you can play it to gain that effect for that specific turn, rather than always having it. Etc. etc. As great an adaption as this game is, I often found myself disappointed that certain elements were missing. That being said, even simplified, there are just sooo many rules, that I have to constantly resort back to the manual which is tedious. It's hard to remember every aspect. Maybe once I've played more and the game play is smoother, I will upgrade to 5 stars. But overall, I love the nostalgia while playing this game. If you or someone you like is a board gamer who was also a fan of the video game, they WILL defiintely like this board game. Also, it is worth noting this only comes with 6 miniatures (all heroes). No castle or army miniatures - that's only in the crowdfunded version on game on Gamefound.
