9+ years and counting! We started using the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Chair in 2012 (bought 3). They received heavy use: virtually every weekend throughout the year at soccer matches as well as 1/2 dozen camping trips. In 2021 we purchased 3 more and will use the original 3 as backups. Why? Since they stay in the garage or in the back of a car in the Texas weather, after about 5 years the webbing eventually started to break. They use webbing for carry straps on the bag, and webbing that adjusts the height of the arm straps (now, the elbow drops slightly below the front of the armrest). As chairs, they still work flawlessly. PROS: They are big and strong and wide - at 800lb capacity, you can fit 2 people if needed. Insanely durable. If you've ever had a chair fail while sitting in it or lament adding yours to the trash can after a tournament weekend, you'll want this chair. Other soccer parents go through at least 2 chairs per year. At least $30 a pop, that's $60 per year per chair. My investment is barely 10% of that, at $6 per year per chair. 2 side pockets, 2 large, deep cup/thermos holders, one back pocket CONS: Their strength is in part due to their metal construction - which means they are heavier than 'normal' chairs. If you have to walk far with more than one, you might consider the advantages of a wagon. If you want a frilly, lightweight chair that you replace every year, try something else. If you want a durable chair that will outlast your child's youth - this is a great, recommended purchase.

Ok, it's really an 11 month update, but hey. This has gotten used in many situations - muddy fair grounds, fishing riverside, uneven ground, even IN a stream once. Absolutely no problems with this at all. Bonus points for easy cleaning - one of the dogs (60 lbs), covered in mud, hopped in it. It hosed right off! No pulls, tears, splits, nothing to complain of. Still very pleased with this! ---------------- Original review: Ok just got this last week and only used it once, so obviously I can't speak to durability, however, given the feel of it, plus the rest of the positive aspects, I feel it will hold up well. It arrived in its carry sack, which I would not normally mention (since they're generally cheap) but this one seemed much better than usual. It comes with adjustable straps for backpack type carry. Stitching is heavy duty and seams are well stitched. I'm actually impressed just with the bag, which is unheard of for me. The chair itself is nothing short of amazing, to me. I'm 5'6" but a large person, and I also have a short waist, so typically if I sit all the way back in a chair, its arm supports at the front will dig into my legs just above my knees. The arms supports on this chair are wider than the seat itself. They do a flair out type thing, so there's even more room if you're a 'wide sitter'. This chair's arms never touch my legs - there are no pressure points at all. There IS, however, a cross bar under the legs from arm to arm. It's not unusual for me to have to put an extra pillow behind me so that my feet can touch the ground. Most chairs I sit in are like that. I used the chair this weekend and purposely sat all the way back and let my feet stick out. The bar would, I feel, begin to be uncomfy after a long period, but was not an issue for the 40 or so minutes I used it. The chair is not cheap on any aspect - it's generously wide, generously deep (front to back) and the back is proportionately tall. No stinting on design at all that I can tell. The fabric is an incredibly durable feeling canvas style, but with enough nylon-type to make it even more weather-resistant than straight canvas would be. While the descr mentions it has "padded" seat and back, it's really just quilted a bit. So not really padded enough to impact comfort, but I personally don't care. It's easy to get up from - with my bad knees sitting too low or in a chair w/o sturdy arms to push up from makes it unusable for me - in this I had no issue. Because of the style of feet, my use this weekend was in a grass field, with rain 2 days before. So not hard, but not squishy. The chair did not sink at all. I'm sure it would in sand or mud type thing, but on regular ground I think it'll be very sturdy. It's made for large people, or someone who just likes extra space I guess, but the point is, it's big. When you fold it and put it back in the bag, it's still going to be big. I did not find it overly heavy and had no problem toting it out in the field, but just don't expect it to be light weight. The cup holders are actually the only disappointment I had. They will not fit my 30 oz Yeti tumbler, nor the Yeti coldster (koozie). It will hold a straight can or a medium size fast food drink cup. However, it's netted so you could use either for a phone or other small gear, too. (The side pockets and back of seat pocket are fine) All in all, I love this chair and I feel like it will stand up to the test of me.

This chair is the best portable / camping / folding chair I have ever had. The big difference between this chair and the rest of the pack is easily visible in the photos. (four vertical legs) Pros: 1. Let me explain, pretty much all folding chairs of this style have the criss-cross x legs around the chair. Some of the light chairs only have the x legs on the sides. Take a look at the photo and you will see that this chair has the x legs on all four sides, 2. The big plus for this chair are the vertical legs on each corner just like your standard chair. I have looked at other heavy duty chairs and have only found one other with the vertical legs. But wait, that one had vertical legs that were resting on top of the x bars. This King Kong chair has all four vertical corner legs touching the ground and each cross leg also goes directly to the base. Take a close look at the picture of legs on this chair and compare it to the picture of any other chair you are interested in buying. There are no legs resting on another leg and the vertical leg in each corner provides super sturdy support. 3. There is no support bar running the length of the armrest, just a bar coming up from the crossbar that sticks out sort of like a rowing machine right under where your hand rests, you can see it in the photo. That bar that holds the armrest taut is heavy duty. Heavy duty enough for a big guy to lean on it completely to sit or stand up. Watch the manufacturer video showing the sitting hand stand on the arms. I didn't try that, but I had no problem putting my weight on the armrests to sit or stand. 4. The seat is taut behind your knees but there is no bar there, it is just tight material. it is designed to be wide in the way the armrests tilt out. I found it very comfortable. 5. The back rest is comfortable and the height of the seat from the ground is no different than any normal chair you have used to sit. This is not one of those low beach chairs. 6. The chair bag has double straps just like a backpack and the chair fits inside easily. The only problem I had was that the draw string got caught until I realized it was in the way and pulled it out of the bag. My error, not the design. 7. Plenty of room for a big guy and the seat is sturdy with a secure feeling, little or no rocking or swaying without some real effort. And of course there are cup holders. Con: Well this is probably one of the heaviest folding chairs of this style so it is not a backpacking or long hiking chair. But this chair is great for bringing to parks, t-ball, and that sort of thing. I would not recommend this for any type of activity where you would be carrying lots of other stuff, but by itself or in addition to a tote bag or day bag it is perfect. If you are the super-active, hiking, running type then this chair will probably be no problem but then you probably don't need this chair. Hope this helps with your shopping for a travel chair.

I really love this chair. I'm a tall guy. Tall and big. After destroying so many of my friends and relatives outdoor seats over the years, I realized that bringing my own chair to cookouts and garden parties was less embarrassing than having to be picked up out of a tangle of canvas and aluminum while people stare very intently at their hotdogs and into the bottoms of their cups. I purchased this one for an out-of-town job where I'd be sitting at a machine 10 hours a day and the only other option available to me were unpadded metal folding chairs. I needed something that would hold me comfortably but also support and make it through three months in a tough environment. It has succeeded on all points. First off, yeah, its heavy. This is not the chair to tote on a long hike...although the carrying pouch has a nice long wide sturdy strap. But for that weight you get a sturdy seat that feels solid and dependable as mamma's love. The canvas is heavy quality, double stitched in places and quilted on the back. It supports me in all the right places too. Granted, its meant more for lounging than work, so some support padding was needed to keep a proper posture for long use. But the seat is more parallel to the ground than others I've had that slope down to the back and the back itself is taut and gives a good surface to brace yourself. The arm height is adjustable in the back which was a nice surprise. It's not winning any beauty contests with the color but two drink holders and pockets on each side and at the back make it a super practical. I cankeep a water, phone, backup battery and assortment of tools by me at all times. As others have mentioned, getting it back into the bag is not a ... super smooth? ...process. But it's totally doable and really not that big a deal. I don't think it's reasonable to expect something that feels like It can hold a hockey team (with equipment) to collapse into a willowy pile of nothing at one touch like those $20 Coleman chairs do. There is also the common complaint that the bars under the arms can become uncomfortable over time - pressing into your legs where they rest up against them. Yeah, that's a thing. The Best I can say is that you will experience that with any chair of this type and that the seat is plenty wide enough that it isn't nearly as bad as others I've used. I do ten hour shifts in it with little trouble. But it is a concern. I expect to have this thing for many years to come and to continue to enjoy it the whole way.

Out of the box on the first day I feel this is a very good buy. I bought this chair because the last line of heavy duty camp chairs I liked was obviously suffering a decline in quality. Their more recent chairs just didn't hold up well despite their premium cost. So while this "out of the box" review might be helpful I'll try to remember to update it in 6 months or so with the REAL review. It seems like all the folding chairs share the same basic design so I guess it comes down to how well executed this company did (this time). This chair seems to be very sturdy and well manufactured. It does weigh a bit more than the last chairs I liked but it's still far lighter than some. All in all the extra weight makes it feel "stable" and not overly burdensome. I do not like the cup holders which are only a couple of inches deep and barely wide enough for a 12oz can of soda. If you like to put a tall coffee travel mug in there it's going to teeter precariously and I couldn't get my water bottle in it at all. And they put two of them the exact same size, one on each arm. It won't even fit my phone. For me no cup holder would have been as useful and having one large enough to hold a water bottle and one elongated to hold a phone would have been ideal. I liked the NUMBER of pouches. One on each side and one on the back. You can't have too many I think. But the side ones have no ventilation in them so moisture and sand that gets in them stays there for a while. All in all, I'm glad I bought it and I may buy another. But I'll look around first for one of similar build quality but better accoutrements.

I remember reading a review on this chair before I bought it that read "This chair is the real deal" and let me just thank whoever said that because a) it swayed my decision to make the purchase and b) it is EXACTLY what I think of every single time I sit in it! Let me get right to the negative: it's a BIG chair. No, it's not the widest chair you might have ever seen, it's wide, fits big guys, but I know there are some other ones that are probably wider, but the thing is, this chair is pretty tall, and where it's tall, it's unforgiving. The part of the seat in the front that goes under the back of your legs sits pretty high so a short person probably would not like this chair and if you have bad circulation in your legs maybe it would even cause you some problems. Funny thing is though, I say that and my 5'5 wife loves the chair and wants to buy another one just for her! So it doesn't bother her at all so it's really a personal thing, I guess. The only real design flaw is in that same spot the holes through the canvas where the front leg and arm support pole rises through make that section of the chair narrow and W I D E in right there, so the very sturdy black plastic/ vinyl grommets to protect the hole can definitely dig into the backs of your legs depending on you sit or how wide your legs are. The con might be significant to you and I do notice that SOMETIMES, it really isn't enough for me to deduct an entire star from this otherwise awesome chair. The good: This chair is ROCK SOLID. I don't care if you weight 350+lbs (we've had probably 550 in it with multiple people sitting on laps and what not). I don't care if the ground is uneven, not level, in grass, in sand, on rocks, on a misshapen boulder, we have sat on this chair in every one of those situations (my favorite was on the boulder, which was in the middle of a river, so I had the chair up on a boulder that was only big enough for the chair, in the middle of a flowing lake, catching sun!) and the chair has never done anything but increase my confidence in it, seriously! And one thing you quickly come to appreciate is the way the ends of the arm rests are VERY STURDY handles for you to get up with. I really can't say enough about this chair. My only real complaint aside from what I had listed above is that it is sewn (with heavy duty stitching) crooked. You can see it when you look at all the places where the black hole protectors are, they're way off so the material is noticeably crooked, my wife has never noticed, I just like reviewing gear so I look for things like that but it absolutely does not effect the use, feel or durability one bit, but if you're a little OCD about everything being perfectly straight you'll notice it too! Now if you'll excuse me I have to order a couple more of these chairs before they stop making them... (ALPS I am joking please do not stop making these!)

This is a great chair with many positive features. First and foremost, we wanted to get several chairs to use in conjunction with traveling in a Class C RV, whose largest storage bin door is quite small. This chair is great for that because it folds up very nicely into a small circumference bundle, which is then able to fit into its storage bag with a drawstring tie at the top. When completely put away, the entire package has a diameter of 9". Perfect for our small bin doors of only 23" across. As for the chair itself, depending upon what you are looking for, my husband and I both find it extremely roomy and comfortable. He is 5'10" tall and approximately 160lbs. There is still plenty of room on either side of him, if you are a larger person. Bear in mind that this is a camping chair, not a cushy patio chair, but even still, the design of the sling is such that once you sit in it, you won't want to get up! The fabric is heavy, and doubled, so that it is quilted. While I would not call it padded, it feels as though it has some padding because of the quilting. This is so much more comfortable than most of these camp chairs that have flimsy, thin, cheap fabric, which make you feel as though you may fall through them if you sit down just a little too hard. It feels very secure, and the fabric envelops you, while still feeling sturdy. Speaking of sturdy, once unfolded, this chair isn't going anywhere! The legs are extremely strong and the design meets the claims of the manufacturer. As they demonstrate in their video, when you go to stand up, and push yourself up with your hands on the front of the arms, it's solid as a rock, which makes it much easier to get up. The front of the arms, just in front of the cupholders, are even padded to make pushing down on it very comfortable. A couple of little bonus features is that there is a magazine/whatever holder on BOTH sides of the armrests, and there are TWO cupholders. There isn't a sharp edge exposed anywhere on the chair. One of the best features of the design is that the back does not have a bar going across the back. When you lean back, there is no metal rod digging into your back or shoulders. For this style of chair, I would put it at the very top in its category. We have tried quite a few camp chairs, and to find one that is small enough to easily fit several in the storage space of a small RV, we haven't found one that compares. Obviously, I highly recommend it !

I'm a big guy (6' 4" / 260 lbs) who attends a lot of my boy's sporting events and prefer a chair to bleachers for hours of sitting. While the standard portable chairs are 'adequate', they tend to feel like they're straining when I move around plus the fabric and mesh just doesn't hold up and begins to tear within a few months. I just purchased the King Kong a week ago so I can't speak to the test of time...but after 1 weekend of baseball, I'm absolutely thrilled with the chair: it's very sturdy yet very comfortable, the materials are tough and high quality, and it simply feels comfortable for sitting around in for several hours. I was in the chair for 3 games on Saturday and at the end of the day I had no back or knee pain which I sometimes suffer when sitting in bleachers or a lesser chair for that long. Getting out of the chair is easy and it's amazing that you can use the armrests to push yourself up and the chair locks into place providing support you just don't get from the lightweight chairs. I even had a number of other baseball dads (mostly big guys) take a seat in the chair. Every one of them sat down and immediately had a smile on their face...I'm not making this up; it's just a solid, comfortable chair that will make you the envy of the guys. To be fair, my wife and kids sat in the King King and didn't really notice much difference from our older chairs...that makes sense because those lesser chairs are fine for smaller people who don't need (nor appreciate) the benefits of the King Kong. While I'm thrilled with the chair, there are a couple of minor negative items worth mentioning: (1) the chair is a 'bit' heavy, but not too bad for a large person to carry around. I lugged mine about 200 yards with no problem. I didn't try the backpack bag but would if I had to carry the chair much farther than I did. (2) the chair is wide making the armrests wide so I found that I couldn't keep my hands in my sweatshirt pockets to keep them arm while resting my elbows on the rests. Not a big deal and as soon as the weather warms up a bit that problem goes away. That's it for critique...not a big deal. I saw in some other reviews where people had critiqued the chair's height...I don't get that because the chair's no taller than a standard dining room chair. It fits me and every other adult male that sat in it just fine. Overall: if you're a big guy looking for rock solid comfort on the go...get this chair!

As a 400+ lbs man, findinding an outdoor chair that doesn't feel like it's going to collapse under you is hard to find, and even when you do sit on a regular folding chair, it's so narrow that the frame is cutting into your leg and extremely uncomfortable. But this chair is fantastic!! Unbelievably sturdy and reassuring that it's not going to break when I sit in it. It's wide enough to comfortably sit in it for hours!! Loving the adjustable height of the arm rests, ample storage pockets, 2 cup holders, and the carrying bag that you can wear as a backpack is awesome. Best chair I've ever owned!!

Its Massive and sturdy. Its Real King Kong and can take weight as mentioned. Im too much happy with the Quality. Just a bit big chair then regular ones but very comfortable.. Thanks Alps !
