Diverter only allows for one feature to be turned on at a time?

Yes. Switch the first knob to turn on the shower head, body jets, handheld shower head as you like. Only use one function at a time. Rotate the second on/off knob to turn on shower and adjust the temperature.

Are all valve and connectors compatible with American Standards?
