Lacks Kill Switch
An exceptionally good and easy to use travel modem. However it does not have a kill switch which is the basic point of having it for its vpn capability. Disappointing as I said itโs very easy to set up and seems reliable otherwise.

This is a little wizard. Do not believe the negative reviews.
I bought this to replace another travel router that cost three times as much as this one. I was looking for something that would be less than $90 CAD but still had decent performance and specs. And since this was going to be used only when I travel, I didn't want to go for top line. I was a bit hesitant because I'm used to the OpenWRT router operating system and I know that TP-Link uses their own firmware/software, Which is not as versatile as OpenWRT. This little wizard surprised me in a good way. It was easy to set up and connect to the internet and Its software, although lacking some of the versatility and extra options in OpenWRT, still does the job well. I tried both the lan cable connection as well as connecting wirelessly to The ISP's modem/router, Adding a new subnet to the network in my house and VPN connectivity. Its 5 GHz wifi connection was pretty fast, even faster than my ISP's router Which is bigger and supposedly more powerful. I kept it running for a whole day. It didn't drop any connections and the internet speed on the devices connected to it was stable enough. - I was impressed with its capability to be connected to more than one VPN at the same time. You can connect as many VPNs as you have subscriptions to and then choose which one of your devices goes through which VPN. For example you can have one for your work computer, one VPN route for your gaming device, and one for watching streaming media/ smart tv. etc - On a 1G connection and with VPN on, this router gave me up to 850 wifi Mbps connection, which is pretty solid for watching Netflix or gaming. - If you have another TP-Link router in the house, you can have them both work in a easymesh network (Where, in theory, this will work as a repeater, boosting the signal to places where the other router's signal is weak) - It can be a second router in the house, just not the main router, because I think it will have a limit to the number of devices that can be connected to it without degrading the performance. If it's kept to two or three devices, it should be okay even as the main router in your home. - As I'm not traveling right now, the only way I could connect to a public network that has a login portal, like what you get in hotels was Starbucks. I tested it at Starbucks and it passed the test. I even rebooted it a couple of times and it never lost the connection. - This is a great way to connect to a public network and still be secure. This router connects you to a hotel network or a coffee shop, or any public network, even those that need you to log in through a portal (like by entering your email address or so). Then you can have your VPN running on this router and connect your phone, your laptop, and any other device you have to this router so you can be using the internet securely while on public networks. I did not experience any connection drops even after restarting a few times. It still works as intended without issues. For the reviews that mention connection drops, maybe the updated firmware that's on it now has fixed these problems. Highly recommended.

Was going to buy the GL.inet and changed my Mind
Update: Oct 2025 About 3 months after buying the travel router WR3002X it died. I called TP-Link and they were actually very responsive. They told me I would have to pay $14 to have a replacement shipped to my house. I would get an email with a shipping label to ship the dead one back for free and lastly the one thing that I did not like. They would Pre Charge my credit card $120 for the new router and cancel the charge if the dead one arrived back to them within 25 days. My first question was why $120? That is nearly double the cost of the router on Amazon. They said it was MSRP value and basically take it or leave it. Anyway I went through with it and within about 10 days I had a new replacement and they had gotten back the old one. I am only out $14 so I guess I cannot complain. Original Review: Wow, I am very happy with this router and it's speed, I was not expecting anything near this speed at this price point. It's darn fast, I was getting the full 150Mb when Wifi Hotspot connected to my Starlink router on 5G. I was going to buy the GL.inet and I am so happy that I did not. This router is much easier to configure and I suspect based on reviews that it is faster. I logged into Express VPN with it and changed my location. Then used the App to just assign the connected device to use VPN. The Speed going through an OpenVpn connection was 80Mb Down and 10 Mb Up which was excellent for such an encrypted connection. The CPU in this router is fast! About the only issue I had with the Router was getting the VPN connection to work the first time. I put in the user and password info for ExpressVPN and the .opvn file they created for the info and it says connecting and stays that way. I kept changing stuff trying to figure out what was wrong and then just by chance I left it uninterrupted for about 2 minutes and it connected. I wish I has known it took that long to establish an OpenVPN connection. Once it is done once the connection is made much faster after that. Please note you need to add client devices to the VPN connection or they will just be connected without VPN. When your on the main screen and press VPN it will take you to the settings to put in a VPN provider. Once that is done and connected you will see at the bottom "Client List". Make sure the device is already connected to the routers WiFi and then hit + and select that device to be added to the client list. That device will now be added unless you remove it.
