“The ultimate body language reference. I’ll be both referring to and recommending this book on a daily basis for many years to come.” —Amy Cuddy From the world’s #1 body language expert* comes the essential book for decoding human behavior. Joe Navarro has spent a lifetime observing others. For 25 years, as a Special Agent for the FBI, he conducted and supervised interrogations of spies and other dangerous criminals, honing his mastery of nonverbal communication. After retiring from the bureau, he has become a sought-after public speaker and consultant, and an internationally bestselling author. Now, a decade after his groundbreaking book What Every BODY is Saying, Navarro returns with his most ambitious work yet. The Dictionary of Body Language is a pioneering “field guide” to nonverbal communication, describing and explaining the more than 400 nonverbal cues and behaviors that will allow you to gauge anyone’s true intentions by reading people more effectively. Moving from the head down to the feet, Navarro reveals the hidden meanings behind the many conscious and subconscious things we do. Readers will learn: how to tell a person’s actual feelings from subtle changes in their pupils; the lip behaviors that betray concerns or hidden information; the many different varieties of arm posturing, and what each one means; how the position of our thumbs when we stand akimbo reflects our mental state; ..and many other fascinating insights to help you both understand the psychology of communication and change their perceptions of you. Readers will turn to The Dictionary Body Language again and again—a body language bible for anyone looking to understand what their boss really means, interpret whether a potential romantic partner is interested or not, and learn how to put themselves forward in the most favorable light. *GlobalGurus.org Review: Great for learning those little clues in body language! - As an author, mastering body language and the little clues each movement holds, is critical. makes for dull reading
Unlike most of Navarro's books, this one makes for dull reading. I am a big fan of the author and purchase as many of his works as I can find. This is the only one that has disappointed me. It really IS a dictionary, LOL. Very thorough, very complete, and very DRY.

A Quick, Helpful Guide for Understanding Body Language
The Dictionary of Body Language has been a really useful quick-reference guide for me. It’s not a long, story-driven book — it’s more like a fast, practical manual you can flip through whenever you want to understand what certain gestures or behaviors might mean. Each entry is short and straight to the point, so you can jump in, look something up, and get an explanation without digging through a full chapter. What I like most is how accessible the information is. The book breaks down everyday movements — like how someone sits, where their eyes go, how they position their feet, or what their hands are doing — and explains what those signals often reveal about comfort, confidence, stress, or interest. It made me more aware of the subtle cues people give off without even realizing it. The only downside is that it’s not a deep psychology textbook or a long narrative; it’s literally a dictionary. If you’re looking for detailed stories or big-picture frameworks, you won’t find that here. But if you want something you can reference quickly and actually use in real conversations or at work, it hits the mark. Overall, it’s a handy little guide for anyone interested in reading people better. Easy to skim, easy to learn from, and surprisingly insightful for how short each entry is.

Joe Navarro does it again!
Mr. Navarro is the foremost expert in non-verbal behavior. I have read most of his books on the subject and this book is the quintessential non-verbal reference guide utilizing his years of study on this subject. I would highly recommend this book for anyone serious about studying non-verbal behavior. There are many authors out there that claim to understand non-verbal behavior but only Joe Navarro, in my opinion, has truly provided scientific substantiation to his observations. I would like to add that I believe reading his book “What Every BODY is Saying” first will provide a better understanding as to the contents of this book. Mr. Navarro is an excellent teacher of non-verbal behavior and I believe this provides another excellent example of his expertise on the matter. I would also recommend those interested in nonverbal behavior check out Mr. Navarro's website which, to me, has been an unbelievable resource for non-verbal behavior studies.

Great Reference Book for Nonverbal Behavior!
I've been studying nonverbal behavior for many years, and have learned most of what I know from Joe Navarro and his wonderful books! This is the 6th book I've read by Joe, and what I like is that it is the first book that's a true Dictionary of Nonverbals I've come across. There are some online body language dictionaries, but in my experience, those are hard to navigate when looking for a specific signal. This is the perfect size to put in a briefcase or purse (see photo) so you can easily carry it with you when you travel or are going to a meeting and want to prep beforehand on nonverbal signals to look for... The book is well-organized, so you can find specific nonverbals easily. Like a word dictionary, it's a comprehensive listing of short explanations of a huge range of nonverbals. If you want stories to go with the nonverbals, you should also buy Joe's "What Every Body Is Saying" and "3 Minutes To Doomsday." As you can see by the photo, I carry this new book with me - highly recommend!

Okay, but not quite what I was expecting.
It's hard to explain my feelings and rating of this book. I can't say it's bad, or doesn't deliver on its promise, it's just, idk. I guess not what I expected. But the problem is, idk what I was expecting. It's very short for one. And a dictionary is the proper title, it's set up just like a dictionary. A chapter, of give or take 10 pages, will be titled the eyes, and give 5-10 dictionary like entries, explaining eye movements, directions etc. But it's very light on depth or nuance. I'm all for simplicity, and dropping of pompousness in writing, that's fine. But this was just too bare bones for me. I mean, we're dealing with a former FBI man of some 30 yrs experience in this. He could have given so much more insight into this. Real world, practical examples from his own life, but none of that. And all the descriptions seem to share basically the same meanings, lot of comorbidity there. Which is fine, and makes sense, but just the way it's presented is so basic and bland, it gets boring, obvious, and repetitive. Maybe some of his other books on the subject are different, but it felt very shallow to me. Like a super crash course. Still, it's an okay book, with some detail, but not enough, and very blandly set up, like a dictionary. I guess I thought the title was more metaphorical, as opposed to literal. I'd recommend it for a light, dipping your toe in the subject reference book. But don't expect much more. Still, and tentative recommend.
