How wide is the hook part?

The hook itself is an inch wide.

Will the surface of the towel hook hurt hands?

Certainly not, the surface of towel hook has been polished during the production process, so feel free to use it .

Are the mounting screw horizontal or vertical

There's a plate that screws into the wall. The hook goes on the plate and there's a set screw underneath the hook that screws up into the hook and holds it on the plate

Can it be screwed to a solid wood door? What's the depth of the screws?

Sure, it can be screwed to a solid door. As for the depth, since I already installed both of the hooks, I'm guessing the screws are around 1" to 1-1/4" long. BTW, they are really nice hooks, real shiny and well made.
