Would this card be suitable for painting and/or drawing on? Or does it have a shiny finish?

Does NOT have a shiny finish, no noticeable bleed when printing B/W or color using a Deskjet printer. Don't know how it would react to paint. My best description would be to call it "11x17 white card stock".

Is there any translucency to this paper despite its weight?

No, there isn't. It's a great paper for lots of projects. However, if you're looking for a paper for greeting cards, I wouldn't recommend this one. It will stand on it's own as a half-fold greeting card, but it starts curling in on itself in a short time. Hope this helps

can these be used for invitation cards?

Yes, I would think so. I use this to make greeting cards. Nice and white paper. It isn't quite the weight of some I get at Wal Mart but I would think it would be perfect for invites.
