I have the Litter Robot and now this
So far I give it 5 stars as of Nov 22, 2025. I own the Litter Robot 3 and 4. 3 was great to start. It has been about 6 years and the sensor of when a cat is in it is starting to go. It has problems telling when to rotate. So it's kind of a sitting, round regular litter box right now. The 4... pfff. Apparently as LR comes out with newer models, they're full of problems. I've had it for about 3 years and I have had terrible issues with it. I've fixed most but the one I just can't solve is that even with no litter in it, even with the gears free of clog, it will not rotate. It tries to but moves a few millimeters back and forth from its spot (no matter what position I place the sphere in) and just tries to turn and just can't. So it stops trying. So this one currently is also a sitting, round regular litter box now. I've seen ads for this and decided to try it. I LOVE that it holds so much more litter than the 3 and 4 combined. I got it set up and working within 5 minutes. Works fine from the get-go. The front of it displayed a '0' when set up, I thought it was an error note at first but it actually is a counter display of how many times it has filtered the litter. It displays a cute cat animation when it detects a cat in it by weight. It has a count down timer of when it is about to do a filter and a progress bar when it starts. Get the plastic bin, don't bother with the cardboard one it comes with. There is a plug that you plug into the side of the litter box that tells the flap on the back of the waste box lid when the waste box should be opened. That's pretty neat. My kittens, one is named Circle who is brave and already peed in it to claim it as hers because she is a fearless apex predator. My other kitten "Orange" also declares "I am an apex predator!" as the rustle of a fake houseplant falling over startles him into a full speed run across the linoleum floor and his ignorance of momentum + turning across a slick surface causes him to wipe out into his water dish. Spilling it everywhere. He will take some time to get adjusted to it. Overall it's pretty simplistic and nice. I'll update this as time passes to see if it still has great functionality and if it lasted longer than the Litter Robots did. Update: 3/14/26 - The front display sometimes likes to freeze in the middle of an emptying cycle. It takes a few days for it to return to normal though it in no way compromises the functionality of the unit as a whole. It still works just fine without the function of the front display. I just do without a display for a bit. Today it looks like it decided to take a break and play "Pong"

2nd Purchase!
We purchased our first Popur x5 with a plastic bin in December 2023. At that time, we only had 4 cats. We have rescued more cats and now have 8! We bought an automatic litter box from another manufacturer. It is a drum type that rotates. It is also difficult to clean and I don't feel like it holds enough litter. Our adult male cats are not too fond of it. They prefer open boxes. We also have regular litter boxes. Our house is not open concept, so the rooms are broken up and divided. We keep multiple boxes because even though everybody is spayed or neutered, the cats are still territorial. And while these electric boxes are great and made for multiple cats, I prefer for them to have more options. Anyway, we came back to purchase another Popur x5 because it is what works for my cats. The first one we bought December 2023 has some litter granules stuck in the gears of the filter swing arm. So it is slowing down a little. If you purchase this, I would recommend putting a cover of some type over the open metal gears where the filter swing arm moves. I took some clear packing tape, cleaned the plastic part that says "Popur" and made a sort of shield with the tape all the way across. I also put tape on the back of that first piece of tape, so it wouldn't stick to the trash bag in the plastic bin when it dumps and then folded the back tape over the front tape. There are also silicone draft guards for doors that might work but you would need to "caulk" the gap between the plastic Popur piece and whatever you use to shield as there would be a ledge to catch litter. We did have issues with our orange male trying to dig a pit to China whenever he would use the litter box. He would literally shovel it out of the box onto the floor. He's gotten used to it and no longer does that. We just swept the litter up and put it back until he figured it out. Also, one of my cats is 18.5 lbs. He could turn around where his hind end is at the back corner of the box but he does not. He chooses to place his hind end at the front corner. Because of this, we have to keep litter shoveled up the side of the box a little past the liner. If the litter is not there and he pees in the front corner, it runs under the plastic guard at the front of the box. It could potentially run onto your floor if there were enough urine. Luckily, we didn't have that issue before we figured out a work around. The instructions with the product tell you not to fill it above the liner but you gotta do what you gotta do. We also have an elderly,16-year-old female cat. She loves using the Popur x5. She has no issue climbing in even though she has arthritis. We also have three cats that will not use the electric boxes. You have to find what works best for your cat. This Popur x5 is what works best for our felines.

Final Verdict: Not Worth the Money
At $420 plus tax (after a $150 coupon off the $570 price for the plastic bin version), the Popur automatic litter box is simply not worth it. Between the buggy app, unreliable Wi-Fi, tiny trash bin, short trash bin wire, non-waterproof liner, poop streaks from the flipping mechanism, random beeping, constant resetting, lack of smart home integration, proprietary bags, excessive weight, and poor overall design, this litter box creates more problems than it solves. I regret buying the Popur and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone, especially multi-cat households. If you're considering it, save your money and look for a better alternative. Read on for a detailed breakdown of all the issues. Major Design Flaws & Poor Build Quality Buggy App & No Smart Home Integration - The Popur app is unreliable—it crashes often, doesn’t always send notifications, and frequently fails to update the litter box’s status. - The litter box constantly disconnects from Wi-Fi, requiring frequent manual reconnections. - It doesn’t work with any other home automation tools, such as Home Assistant, meaning the buggy app is the only way to control it. If the app is down (which happens often), there’s no other way to interact with the device. Small, Poorly Designed Trash Bin - The trash bin is too small. With four cats, I have to empty it twice a week, whereas my previous LitterMaid setup easily lasted two weeks. - The trash bin doesn’t open before the cleaning cycle starts, causing litter to pile up on top or behind the bin instead of inside it, creating extra mess. - The trash bin can shift away from the main unit, leading to litter getting trapped between the bin and the unit—another frustrating cleanup issue. Short Trash Bin Wire = Unnecessary Hassle - The wire connecting the trash bin to the main unit is too short, so every time I remove a full litter bag, I have to disconnect and reconnect the wire. - Worse yet, if the trash bin is unplugged and re-plugged, the entire litter box goes into an error state and stops working completely until I unplug the whole unit from power and plug it back in. Litter Box Liner is NOT Waterproof - The liner inside the main litter box area is not waterproof, meaning urine can soak through and leak underneath. This leads to nasty buildup and odors, making cleaning more difficult than it should be. Unnecessary Proprietary Trash Bags - Popur forces you to use their overpriced proprietary trash bags, instead of letting you use standard bags like other litter boxes. This adds unnecessary recurring costs and makes the box more expensive over time. Random Resets, Beeping, and Heavy Weight - The Popur randomly resets itself and starts beeping at random times, even when no cleaning cycle is running. - I’ve been woken up in the middle of the night because it started beeping for no reason. The only way to stop it is to unplug it from the wall and restart it. - It’s heavy and difficult to move, which makes deep cleaning and repositioning a pain. Unlike smaller litter boxes, this one is cumbersome to lift or tilt, adding unnecessary frustration to routine maintenance. Flipping Mechanism = Poop Streaks + Long-Term Reliability Concerns - Flipping Causes Poop Streaks – The Popur cleans itself by flipping the entire litter box over, which often results in poop streaks on the top of the box. Instead of being hands-free, I have to manually wipe it down after cleaning cycles. - Too Many Moving Parts = Likely to Break – The entire unit flips over each time it cleans, meaning there are a lot of moving parts. This seems like a long-term reliability issue. With four cats using it multiple times a day, I doubt this will last long before something breaks. What Worked Better: LitterMaid 3rd Edition + Aftermarket Wood Stand At home, I used a LitterMaid 3rd Edition litter box, which, while not perfect, was far more reliable than the Popur. Instead of using the small plastic waste receptacles it came with, I bought an aftermarket wood stand that lifted the LitterMaid unit about a foot off the ground. - The stand included a chute system that funneled used litter directly into a regular plastic bag, making cleanup incredibly simple. - With this setup, I only had to empty the waste every two weeks, compared to twice a week with the Popur. - This setup was cheaper, more efficient, and far more reliable than the expensive and flawed Popur unit. Unfortunately, LitterMaid has been discontinued, and finding a true replacement has been a struggle. If LitterMaid were still available, I’d buy another in a heartbeat instead of wasting money on the Popur. If you made it this far, you can see why I don't recommend Popur. At this price point, there are better, more reliable solutions out there—this just isn't one of them.

Better than the litter robot
Initial review gets 4 stars because setting this thing up was annoying. Finally got it to work but it was a pain resetting it multiple times to get it to pair. Otherwise it's awesome. I like how the bag covers the waste lid so no waste touches the actual container. The only part that comes into contact with the waste is the mesh gate. The gate also acts as a rake and smooths out the litter after it finishes cycling. Best of all, everything is removable to include the litter liner. Cleanup will be simple. I have a taller cat and the litter robot was a bit short for him. Also it had too many parts that came into contact with the waste. Gross. Still trying to clean the globe and base so I can resell it but I'm questioning whether that's possible.

Ultra Picky Cat, Loves it.
My Wife's Cat, is "SOOOO" picky. It would rather go every where else than fresh and clean litter box it doesn't like. I've gone through many automatic cleaning litter boxes, shopped the entire freaking market, had the other cat love other boxes along the way that my Wife's cat would not touch!! Finally i found this one, and wow i have to agree with him, it is top of the line compared to all the others. If that doesn't convince you, nothing truth will. I opted for the plastic box and not the cardboard one. Didn't want to take chances. The wife's cat is abnormally large, The machine is built solid, and setup was so easy i was surprised, it seems to be very much self-sufficient and even handles the cat's abnormally large messes he makes with ease. I mean he broke the last litter box with the sheer weight of the messes he makes. It seems to be pretty easy to clean up since it avoids making messes in the first place, it was designed this way.. genius. It has a VERY Large Litter box depth that holds 18lbs of litter in it's pan when full. Value for the money? I am still determining, if it lasts 3 or more years then yea it's worth it if not... damn cat...why do i love you.... lol kidding, but you get the point.

Why did l wait so long to buy this??
I just got this set up about 10 days ago and so far it has been great. Absolutely no smell at all and it will need to changed it out for the *first time tomorrow. I have two large boys that have large clumps they leave behind, so it’s pretty impressive the amount of waste the box holds, however, l think my other cat just started using in in the last few days. I did get the box with the plastic waste box because when researching it seemed some people were not happy with the cardboard box. It is very quiet for the most part, which l was worried about. My SIL set it up for me in no time. The waste box is shipped separately from the main litter box. I am thrilled with how long I can go with out doing anything and that there is ZERO odor! 😻 I will amend this review if l have any issues. I don’t have the app portion yet, but may download that. I would definitely recommend this! UPDATE: So far so good with only one complaint l hope they will provide a fix for. While this is a large box for the cat to do his business, he always does it in the front corner which hasn’t been a problem until today because it still always went into the box except a couple of times but today he has diarrhea and it went outside and down the side of the box. 🥴 😹 I was just leaving but glad l stopped to watch him. Anyway, it would be nice if it had a “cat bumper” to force their furry little butts a little farther inside the pan to prevent cats that like to stick their booty’s out from doing so. For now, guess l will use some puppy pads underneath to keep any droppings that might go outside. 🙀😹😹😹 l still love this thing as it has saved me so much time fooling with scooping stinky poo. Hey, Popur…can you provide a solution for cat bottoms hanging out of the box??? 😹 🫶 😽

Obvious why Popur developed a better version
Not nearly as user friendly as the newer version. The rake doesn't come close to returning the unused litter to the front of the box where all of the "business" occurs and this component for some reason traps a lot of the soggy urine clumps creating a soiled mess. Not only must I pour more litter in the front after every dump cycle but this product generally requires frequent scrubbing of all the plastic parts (except collection box which has plastic-bag liners). It does contain odors well in the plastic box and the litter walls are high enough to keep too much litter from flying out. But opt for the latest model Popur if you can afford it.

Best Box available for large cats
I spent many hours and weeks researching different litter boxes. Originally I went with another brand totally enclosed and I do like it but one of my four Cats won't go into it. I ordered an open top box and unfortunately it was not stable enough for my Big boys so ended up returning it. It rocked back and forth and they would not go in it. I discovered this one from popur and I really wish I'd found it first. It's perfect! I have four cats sizes 9 lb 12 lb 18 lb and 20 lb. For big cats all the other automated boxes out there seem very claustrophobic . Not with this box. Plenty of room. I've even had two of them get in there at the same time without a problem. As far as the waste receptacles my first purchase had a 10L compartment and that would fill up in 5 days. The waste receptacle on this Popur S5 is so large I am emptying it for the first time today. It's been set up for 12 days And three out four cats are using it regularly. 12 days! I used to scoop boxes every three days And now all I have to do is take a garbage bag out once every 12 days. You cannot imagine the relief!!!!
