Would I be able to take an old coaxial video game system, and play it through this VCR on my TV?

Sorry so late in reply - - -You may be able to do so. , when I make a change from time warner cable to my dvd play through the vcr , it works fine. Also , my roommate has a switcher box to switch from cable tv veiwing to play his video games . . I hope this helps!
