Excellent Tamp
I'd had the smaller 54mm version for my previous Sage machine and was very happy with it so now I've replaced the Sage I needed a 58mm tamp and the MHW-3BOMBER was an obvious choice. Very easy to use with a consistently level puck. The 58.35mm is perfect for my Profitec 600 Pro portafilter.

After cautiously reassembling the tamper and with careful use, the tamper delivers from what i can see, ideal espresso pucks and for all purposes seems to work as advertised. Over-all impressions is that the tamper, is like most other tampers out there, but this one appears to be thought out and well made. It is solid, and with a little practice delivers as expected. There are tampers out there that cost hundreds of dollars and honestly do not deliver close to half what this one does. I would classify this as a mechanical tamper meaning one just doesn't tamp down the grinds but rather relies on the tamper to adapt and apply the 'correct' pressures one need to facilitate extraction. The tamper, as is, has its flaws but I equate that to 'personal' preferences, NOT design. Meaning you adapt to the tamper not the tamper adapts to the user. There is a learning curve to take into consideration, but certainly not a deal breaker nor a day long process. The user will figure it out within a few cups of use. From there it will get progressively easier to use and with proper technique deliver useable pucks that deliver quality coffee. Common sense tells you that in order to change tamper rings or exchange the extra spring you HAVE to disassemble the product. I'm pretty sure that the manufacturer planned it that way so that every time you want to change the puck-press you are not returning it to the manufacture. Honestly, it is not that difficult to take the press apart, change the press, put the springs back, and drive on. You would know after first use if you got it right. And with the quality of materials employed within the tamper itself, there is little reason to suspect that you will cause lasting damage. It is possible, but highly unlikely of causing lasting damage. The tamper's design is perfect for any person just starting out with espresso and wishes to upgrade their machine's original equipment. Most machines today come with standard materials that serve the user but that sooner or later the user will decide to upgrade to more substantial materials, and the tamper is just one of those upgrades that is simple enough. I have a number of espresso tampers in my coffee inventory and this one is seated right next to the machine, gets used, and from what I see works. It did, at first take some time to adjust, but that's just learning about this particular tamper. The design is functional and is the right size for most hands. The plate(s) are of good quality and deliver the precise amount of pressure that is often needed. Tamping is an art or technique that often goes unnoticed, and this tamper takes some of the guess work out of the equation. Again, for someone looking for a good upgrade to their existing system this one will suffice until you want to take a second mortgage on the home and get one of those hundred-dollar systems that will do the same thing. Sort of confusing as the directions state do not take apart, yet to change the press ring (comes with extra) you have to take it apart. They are clear that taking this apart invalidates the warrantee. So, I ask just how, if you want, do you attach a new press? Reaching out to the company didn't address this directly. It also comes with a spring, but then again you are put in the position of how to you replace the spring without taking it apart? Other than the mis-information put out, the press is a little stiff but that is what I expected. It calibrates the pressure which, if you know anything about espresso, the tamping of the grounds is in itself a science. So, the proper tamping pressure is critical, or so they say. This device will produce the proper pressure, if that is what you think you need. The materials are of good quality and seem to be made to last. Cleaning? Again, back to the original instructions, you are not supposed to disassemble it. And yes, it will gather grounds. So, aside from some conflicting information, this is a good choice for the entry level or from someone looking for getting precise tampered coffee.
