Would this work for on original Gamecube hardware?

Yes, it has the exact same functionality as the original controller.

Would I be able to use this while the switch is in the dock, because it looks like it only plugs into the charger port on the bottom of the switch.

This product will only work with the gamecube controller adapter for the wii u which is also compatible with switch for select games. The adapter plugs in via the two usb ports on front of the Nintendo switch dock.

Best controller for smash

I'm not sure how to describe this controller other than its perfect for smash by far, it's better than a Wii remote, switch pro controller, Xbox controller, keyboard and mouse ( if you play smash on pc ) it just feels right and the price is good.

Perfect for Smash Ultimate

Overall the controller is really solid. I also have a power A wireless gamecube-like controller, but it doesn't match up to this official nintendo controller in terms of stick accuracy and build quality. There are some reports on stick drift (I have not noticed anything), but worth checking so you can exchange if needed. My only complaints are the lack of start button functionality and a soft Z button that is unsatisfying to press.
