This helped to avoid a very costly repair. The plumbing contractor who installed the cast iron drain pipe for my basement stall shower made the drain pipe over an inch too short. He covered his error with a copious amount of silicone caulk which leaked after several months. Although this replacement drain is designed for PVC pipe I was able to use it to solve my leaking drain problem by using a 2" diameter PVC pipe extender, some silicone sealant, and this WingTite replacement drain. After carefully removing all the old drain components with a Dremel tool and removing all the water-logged silicone, I fitted the PVC pipe extender into the cast iron pipe. Some grinding of the pipe extender was needed since cast iron pipe has a slightly smaller inside diameter than PVC. Once it was inserted, I installed the WingTite drain following the directions. The results were excellent and everything is perfectly dry after a month of use. Everything fit together snugly and I used silicone sealant to seal everything. Unlike the original job, there is now plenty of direct contact between the PVC parts The unique design of the WingTite provided a very tight joint between the drain rim and the shower pan. Using care while tightening the WingTite screws and the correct size Phillips screw driver there was no issue with the screw heads as indicated in some reviews. Perfect!! This repair should last a decade or more. The WingTite was a perfect solution to my unique situation and should work as well for a routine PVC drain pipe repair. It looks like a professional installation and is well built.

I had a leaky drain in my upstairs shower. I called a plumber who recommended I buy this drain.i did not want to take the kitchen ceiling down but with this replacement drain there is no need to open up the ceiling below the shower. The directions show how to remove a plastic drain by cutting it with a hacksaw. My drain was brass. Dead stop😖 I contacted customer support and spoke to a knowledgeable staff member who expertly explained in extreme detail the steps I needed to do in order to remove the brass drain. Die grinder or dremel with a metal cutting wheel. Slowly cut a channel around the entire drain about 3/8” below the flange near the castle nut threads. Once the drain body was separated and any caulk and gasketing were removed, I was able to push the bottom Of the drain away from the shower base. Take your time and diligently clean the exterior of the drain pipe removing ALL silicone and contaminant's with a scotchbrite pad. Chamfer the outside edge Of the top of the drain pipe with some Sandpaper. Use dishwashing liquid and apply it to the black gasket on the inside of the replacement drain flange. This helps the gasket slide onto the pipe. Place a liberal amount of silicone on the bottom side of the drain flange and push onto the drain pipe. Seat the drain flange and use a Philips head screw driver to tighten the flange. 20-30 plus turns per screw and keep pressure on the drain. Tighten evenly until you can’t tighten anymore. There should be a fair amount of silicone squeeze out from the flange. Water and a few squirts of dish soap in a spray bottle and spray around the top of the drain surrounding floor and the squeeze out cleans up easily! Top quality Product and a plumber probably would have charged $400 plus to do the job. Highly recommended and their customer support deserves an 11 on scale of 1-10.

Well, I noticed a little stain on the ceiling in my pantry. I finally got around to checking it and whoa nelly - water was actually leaking down wall into the basement from the second floor shower. A lot of water from what I could tell. The "awesome" plumber over tightened the ring and broke the drain in half. Essentially we were showering with no drain flange. I already opened the ceiling, but working between the joists was not easy. I've seen a lot of recommendations for this product. Yes, it is 10 times more expensive than a regular drain will cost you. But it's not easy to work on all shower drains sometimes, access is the key. Also, I haven't had any plumbers that walk out the door making less than $100. Removing the old drain parts was difficult. I had to carefully drill holes and break the PVC to remove my parts, partially because of the broken flange. Once that was done, I had to scrape off a bunch of old glue or something. It wasn't possible from the bottom and it was uncomfortable from the top. Be sure you stuff a rag in the drain, since a shower floor is made to drain everything tilts and easily falls into the drain pipe. One thing I wasn't so sure of was that I thought this would fit into the inside of the drain pipe, but it actually fits outside. In my brain, a great way to stop leaks is to drain in and have no lip that could leak (of course this would make the drain smaller). But it seems to work. As a precaution I threw some silicon glue around the drain lip too, hoping it couldn't hurt. Installation was a breeze. A quick test the next day showed no leaking. I'm going to keep the hole open for a bit and even install a leak sensor at the location. Maybe it's the lip thing or just how easy it was to install but my comfort is a little off. Not saying my instincts are always right though. Either way, it was easy as advertised and isn't leaking now so it's got 5 stars.

I had the misfortune of having a leak in my second floor shower, and that's when this little saga began. The first step involved getting the old drain out. I started doing this even before I ordered the WingTite. You're going to have to get the old drain out no matter what product you go with, so you might as well do that first and figure out what you're dealing with. In my case, I had an "Oatey" ABS drain. I even went to the hardware store and looked at other Oatey drains, and to pick up the little tool that's used to remove the locking ring from the inside of the drain. The tool usually comes with new drains. You can pick up the tool at your local big box store -- buy a new drain if you need to . Often there's a bunch of tools laying around that got separated from their drain packages and they'll just give you one. The little tool goes into the drain from the top, you stick a screwdriver in it, and turn and the locking ring will back out. In my case, it didn't back out. It turned harder and harder and just wouldn't go. I ended up drilling through the 'locking ring' so I could try to chip it out. Well, surprise! There is no locking ring. What I thought was a locking ring was part of the drain body. I have one of the dreaded 'solvent weld' drains that's glued to the riser pipe. At this point, I drill a whole bunch of little holes around the perimeter of the drain, being careful to neither nick the riser pipe, nor nick the shower pan. I take a hacksaw blade and hold it in my gloved hand and cut through all those little holes and separate the drain body from the riser. I then notch the drain body as shown in the instructions and remove the drain body. What I'm left with is a riser pipe with about and inch and a half of glued-on drain body stuck to it. There's really no good way to separate an ABS pipe from the drain body. Obviously you can't stick the wingtite on it in this condition. The answer is to cut off the riser pipe with a special 'internal pipe cutter' (amazon has them, search for it, looks like a super-sized dremel cut off wheel). You put the pipe cutter tool in your drill, and cut off the pipe, about three or four inches down. You then go to the hardware store, and buy some 2" ABS pipe, some ABS glue, and a 2" ABS coupler. Cut your pipe to a tiny bit shorter than what you just removed, glue the coupler to it. Now, slop up the pipe under the shower pan with some glue (it's hard to work through the drain hole, but doable). Slop up the coupler with some glue and push it down the hole and onto the cut-off riser pipe. Give it a little twist if you can. Hooray! I've now repaired the riser pipe with a nice smooth clean one that should mate up to the WingTite's O-ring nicely without leaks. The rest of the installation went fine as per the instructions. It's been about an hour since finishing the job. I'd say it took me 2 to 3 hours total, plus travel time to the hardware store. I'm not expecting any leaks. I'll post if I get any. I do think there is some room for improvement in the product. I wish there was a double O-ring seal instead of a single O-ring. That would give me extra peace of mind. I wish they made an extended-length version for those of us with glued on drains so we could just cut the riser off an put the new drain on. To the guy or guys who complained about the cost of the WingTite. Yeah, it's expensive. Really expensive for what it is. That's capitalism for you, there's always the option of cutting out some drywall and installing $7 drain from below, and then patching your drywall back together and texturing and priming and painting and then odds are it never looks quite right. For the rest of us, there's WingTite, and it's worth the money.

Super easy fix. Exceeded expectations. Solved a problem I thought was going to be more of a project. Pricey but worth it. READ the instructions!

My fiberglass shower is installed on a concrete slab so when ot started leaking I couldn't acess it from below. This drain worked perfectly. The hardest part was cuting out the old drain but with a hacksaw blade and a wood chisel I was able to reomove it. I did use a high quality plumbers lube on the oring to facilitate installation, dont know if it was needed but it gave me more confidence. After waiting a day for the silicone to dry no leaks.

This is buy far the best solution for install a shower drain. It saved me from ripping out the shower floor. Easy to install great instructions.

I could not be more impressed with this, saved me a big plumbing job, however anyone buying in thr uk will need to find a pipe reducer at a plumbers merchants to use it as it doesn't fit a uk standard waste pipe.

I replaced a new solid brass unit that I could not stop from leaking with wingtite. So far Wingtite works no leaks but it is a light peace of plastic and cost $80. There is ton of support videos 1800 number and clear instructions on there web site if there is any problems. Easy install from the top, pipe needs to half an inch from bottom of shower pan, soap gasket, silicone bottom and tighten 4 screws and good to go when silicone is cured.
