Can you mount this vertically?

Sure! As long as you have a solid surface behind it for the screws. It does not have a designated top or bottom, will fit vertically or horizontally. Made in America. !!!

Can you use it one handed or does it just let the roll keep going?

Steve--You asked about whether one can pull a towel off this holder, using one hand: yes, indeed you can--just pull and tear. I move fairly fast in the kitchen and don't have time for a towel dispenser that seizes up or "free-rolls." So far--and I have the dispenser some months, now, it has performed just as one would like it to do. I'd recommend it. CDF

I don't have a drill. How else could I attach this to the wall above the sink? Thanks.

I tried command strips (kitchen ones), they didn't hold for even a day. I am using Velcro now, will be harder to take off well and doesn't look as nice but it works. It does leave the towel rack a. It from the wall and a touch wobbly so I can't really recommend.
