i bought the very same coffee maker 18 months ago for $38.50. What's up with this ridiculous price increase?

You aren't the only one who wants to know why this is so much more expensive now. I broke my upper bowl and was going to get another. Can't find a replacement now for just the upper bowl and the complete siphon is a bit too pricey lately. Still waiting for the price to drop some. :(

Do you have to purchase filters with this, or does it come with one?

This comes with one filter but I ordered replacement filter at time of purchase.

Does the water or coffee ever come into contact with plastic or is it all glass inside?

The one I have is all glass, the only plastic part is the gasket that is between the top and the bottom unit and it does not come into contact with either the water or the coffee. So no, the water or coffee does not come into contact with plastic.
