Designed to keep you cool and shaded from powerful UV rays, the expansive brim of the Transit Sun Hat™ keep the sun off your grill, while the venting mesh panels let the breeze cool your dome. Review: Nice hat...fits my head just right - Just what I was looking for! It's light-weight, but still feels well-made. The vents on the sides are nice and do seem to help to cool my head, but don't expect miracles--it is a hat after all... I have a 23" head and the large fits just right. If it shrinks much at all I'll be in trouble, but for now, I never feel like it's too tight. The bucket part of the hat is a good size too--not too big, not too small. If anything, I'd say the bucket part is a little bigger than it needs to be, but not awkwardly so. The brim has a great shape and shades my eyes, ears and neck effectively. I wasn't a fan of the strap/string that hangs down so I removed it, however, there are still 2 little loops (where the strap attached) right next to my ears. I notice them, but they don't bother me. In fact, on the plus side, they help me know that I have the hat on straight! Review: Satisfied customer - I purchased this hat to gain more protection from the sun at my kid's swim meets and while boating and I have not been disappointed. Fit: I have a very large head and have difficulty finding hats that fit me. Even X-Large is typically too small for my head. I purchased this hat in the X-Large size and it fits just right. Not too tight but not so loose that it will fly off. I wear it on my boat and have not had and problem with it staying on while at cruising speed without using the strap. The hat has a drawstring at the back to tighten the fit if it is too loose but I have not had to use that feature. Construction: The hat seems very well made. Good workmanship. The brim is well shaped and stiff enough that it has not gotten floppy or droopy. It is wide enough to provide the sun protection desired. The hat does float as advertised. Comfort: The venting at the sides of the hat keep it cool that I have not noticed any discomfort even when standing in direct sun for many minutes even with the darker color. It is not a heavy hat and I forget it is on my head which is an indication of the comfort. Style: It is a casual, fedora-like style hat so it may not be for everyone. It is a look you don't see very often where I live. I have not received any compliments when wearing it but nor have I received any negative comments. Overall I am VERY pleased with this purchase and am confident recommending it to others. It does exactly what I need it to do. Product update (2016): After several years of use this hat is still going strong. While it has faded a bit, it is still holding together well with no stitching failure, stretching or fraying. It still floats and stays on my head in the strongest of wind.

Does The Job
I hesitated to spend the extra bucks to get this hat. I figured I would just get some cheapo thing at first. But why spend half the price on something that will be crap when you can spend a little more and get a nice product. Yeah, this hat was above my meager budget, but I don't regret buying it. Pros: Very light. The vents keep your head a little cooler than most hats (the reason I usually hate hats). The size was just right and the pull spring on the back of the hat really helps adjust it perfectly. I tuck the chin strap up in to the hat and it doesn't seem to bother me up there. The thing seems really well-made. I saw no flaws in the material or stitching. Cons: Can't really think of any to be honest. I can't speak to the durability as I've only been using it a short while. In the unbearable heat of the Indiana sun, it keeps my next from bursting into flames. You buy a hat to do one job and this one does it as well as could be expected. I knocked off one star purely for the price. At this price point, I would expect something made in the USA, not China. EDIT: Just got back from a month-long archaeology expedition in the blazing sun. This hat probably saved my nose and ears, which are always the first things to burn. It held up to field work in the sun, mud work coring lakes, torrential rain, etc. Found no real flaws or weaknesses. The vents make it slightly more breathable than something like a felt hat, which helped out. Plus, I could soak it in water and put it back on for a little relief from the heat. I still recommend this hat very highly.

This will be your do anything, go anywhere hat.
Since the UPS man delivered it to my door sometime in September of 2012, this hat has been my constant companion. I walk for fitness at least an hour every day, and this cover does an excellent job of protecting my head from the sun. But it is really utilitarian as a 3-season hat. You will bless the mesh side vents when it is hot outside but, be warned - this is not for cold weather - you will curse them if it is cold outdoors (especially if you are balding or have very short hair, as I do). Though it won't be of much use in a driving rain, I have worn this hat in a steady to moderate rain and it did a decent job of keeping my head dry (the rain falls off the front of the brim if you tilt your head down). It is a good looking rig too, very jaunty looking. The mushroom color fits my preferred range of colors exactly. If it needs cleaning, just toss it in the washing machine. From scanning other reviews on Amazon, I'm gathering that one of this hat's weaknesses is also one of it's strengths, i.e. it is very lightweight, but it is also packable. I did a ton of research before buying this hat, and I usually never buy something I am going to wear on my head unless I have the item there with me to try it on. Too much risk that it is going to look goofy on you when you get it in your hands, but I could not be happier with the Outdoor Research Transit Sun Hat. It is not a 75 dollar Tilley, but it is also not pretending to be anything other than what it is: a very good, serviceable sun hat and a darn good value to boot. In case you can't tell, I love this hat.

Cool hat fits good
Hat is very lightweight and vented to allow a breeze thru. I ordered mine a little big in XL size, but the hat comes with an adjustable interior elastic strap which allows the hat to be adjusted tighter for a snug fit. Provides great sun protection and is comfortable. If you have a large head or typically wear larger hats do not buy the ONE size fits all sun hats. Order one like this where u can order it in YOUR specific size. I wear a 7.5 hat size (LARGE ballcap size), so this fits a little loose, but I prefer a looser more relaxed fit. If tighter fit is desired u can adjust tension strap in back and it will accommodate your head. Not a cheap hat but worth the money. Quality is much better than the $15-$25 cheaper brands.

Great Sun Hat
It's hot and sunny here in Central Florida. So you need more then a visor or a ball-cap when your out in the yard or fitness walking or just picking up the mail at 2:00pm. Going Hat-less from 12:00 noon to 6:00pm even in the fall or winter is stroke time in this neighborhood. That's why the "Outdoor Research Transit Sun Hat" interested me. Here is my evaluation: It looks Cool in a funky sort of way. The fact that it is actually cool and lite on the head is more important. The hat gives you plenty of air through the mesh sides, and Shades the eyes, back of the neck and head from the sun. The lanyard is a great idea but it could be longer. It's a great putter around the house hat, and it'll do to pick up groceries or meds from local stores. Medium should fit most heads from 7" to 7 1/4" well. Its a bit snug for larger heads and sits on the ears for smaller ones, So pick your size appropriately. All in all, it's a great hat, well worth 5 stars.

Quickly stained from sweat
I work outside in the Florida sun as well as being an avid fisherman. I feel this hat serves it's purpose very well. More comfortable than I thought it would be and does not move around on my head as a ballcap does. Great sun protection. The only drawback being.. there is now a pinkish band from sweating that has permeated the hat brim. (After a few days of wearing) For work I can deal with it. For fishing out in public...not so much! I may try to dye it darker using RIT dyes.

Great Fit & Finish! Great Patterning & Brim!
I LOVE Sun Hats. As a dude/dad ~ Its not the most flattering of style choices, but, they get the job done! I purchased this, along with another OR hat without the mesh on the sides. I originally planned to try both and return the one that I didn't like quite as much, however, I now plan to keep both! And here's why! So ~ Lets start! Pro's: 1) Lightweight, definitely breathable with the mesh sides, and great color/pattern. 2) UPF50! Woot! 3) Affordable 4) OR (Outdoor Research ~ From the 4 sunhats we have purchased from them ~ starting to love this brand) 5) Stitching was well done. 6) Curvature of the brim! Sticks out nice and far, but actually curves & bends nicely much like a cowboy hat. My other OR hat does not and is simply flat all the way around. Con's: 1) Mesh ~ For those without hair, this could be a problem. I can see sun getting through and burning your scalp! Only 1 con, and its not even a con for myself. I've been blessed with a full head of hair! Overall ~ I'll rate this hat a solid 5 stars. Affordable, and works as expected, and should work out great for mowing my lawn or our Florida vacation in a few weeks!
