I am so glad I got this one! I also got some other books but they are better as references. For starting this book is perfect: 1. Everything you need to know to start is condensed to 23 pages. It’s concise and it’s thorough and informative, well written and well edited. 2. It’s colorful and easy to read. For someone who needs to skim fast, it’s super easy to get the information very quickly. 3. Pictures are amazing. Whoever illustrated this is a genius, the kids facial expressions actually match the signs which is not something you get in most books!! Part of sign language is facial expression and this book brilliantly captures it. E.g., the sign for “dog” has the boy actually looking like he is saying “here boy!” 4. I will use this book the most at first, and as we add signs later will probably use the other reference books. 5. each sign has “what to look for” or similar signs so you will more easily detect baby’s imperfect first tries of signing so you don’t miss it. Very very useful. I think this book goes extremely well with the Baby Sign Language flash cards by Monta Briant and I’ll be using these two things together.

Our daughter LOVES this book, and so do we. We had dabbled in sign language before getting this book, but once we added this in we quickly found the use of sign language in our home exploded. Our daughter is now 16 months old and easily has more than 40 sign language words. It's an incredible thing to be able to communicate with your preverbal child. I never would have known all the things she notices or feels, if it weren't for sign language. Now she can tell us that she feels happy, or notices the sounds of the birds in the morning. It also reduces frustration and meltdowns because she can tell us things that would otherwise be hard to guess, like she wants us to play music. I'd recommend this book to any parent or caregiver. Unlike other books, this book has very clear illustrations for how to do the sign and useful memory tips. Like, "mouse" involves tapping your nose which seems random and forgettable until the book explains that it's like a mouse's wiggling nose. Those little details have helped me remember signs, which then lets me teach them to my daughter. The book also uses realistic illustrations of cute kids, which attracts my daughter's attention. She likes to flip through the book on her own and look at them. The other thing I like about this book is she offers ideas for activities that could involve the signs that you've learned, like how to sign along with popular songs (Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, I Like to Eat, Eat, Eat Apples and Bananas) and classic board books.

This book is everything I was looking for and more. It’s organized very well and the pictures along with descriptions of each sign make it so easy to learn. There are lots of extra tips throughout the book that really help with how to effectively teach your baby like recommendations of books and songs. And I absolutely love that it explains what it might look like as your child is learning each sign so that you know what to look out for. Very informative!

Signing should be on every new mothers list of thing to teach your baby. The tinies really can learn to communicate their needs. This book is a good place to start, a few meaningful words will make a huge difference. And it super easy to learn and teach. The truth is, I bought this book because I personally know the author. My own children are school-age now, so I figured I'd browse through the book and then give it to a friend who has an infant. But when I saw my 10-year-old poring over the book, practicing signs, and smiling to himself, I couldn't wait to delve deeper into the book myself. And when I did, I realized that I can't possibly regift this book; it's too special to give away! This is the book I wish I'd had when my children were infants. When my first child was born, I was vaguely aware that signing with my baby would be beneficial, and somewhere I picked up a few signs: MILK, MORE, and EAT. My baby took to these signs right away, and they became valuable communication tools for us. I considered teaching my child more signs, but when I glanced at baby sign books in the library, they looked overwhelming and daunting for my sleep-deprived, new-motherhood-addled mind. My child ended up speaking early and well, but I can't help wondering what I missed out on before speech emerged. What would he have communicated to me had I introduced more signs to him? I talked to my baby all the time, but how would he have responded if he'd had the tools to communicate back to me? I'm sure that if someone had handed me this book at that time, I would have glanced through it and been drawn in by its clear illustrations and accessible format. I would have jumped right to the chapter on the first 10 signs and introduced my child to several useful and then playful signs, and even my fatigued brain would have been able to utilize the author's concise memory tips to recall each sign. After meeting with success with these signs, I would have gone on to introduce mealtime signs, changing and getting dressed signs, bath and bedtime signs, and animal signs. I would have loved to use the author's suggestions for incorporating signing into books that we happened to already own and songs that we were already singing. During my more lucid moments of my child's first year, I would have gone back to read the author's introduction and explanation of baby signs, and I would have felt even better about making the decision to incorporate signs into our daily life. This book is written with such loving awareness of infant development. With its anecdotes about the author's own signing experiences with her children, it feels as though a friend is patiently guiding the reader along. No wonder my 10-year-old and I were instantly taken with the book! What we missed 10 years ago, we can now understand together.

Great book. It's not too long and it goes to the point quite quickly. There's a brief introduction at the beginning of the book and then it goes directly to the signs sections. I find the tips for each sign very useful because sometimes it's not easy to understand the sign from the picture. Looking forward to start signing with my daughter!

Giving this a shot for better communication with my baby. Hoping the terrible twos won't be as dramatic if she has a reliable way to communicate. So far I have started with one sign, "milk" and she is starting to show signs of understanding. Soon I will add toilet during diaper changes. But she is only three months old and the book says not to expect anything untill four to six months. I love the illustrations and the instructions are easy to follow. I also like that there are tips in identifying how your baby might be signing back to you. At the end of each chapter there are songs and stories along with some tips that use the signs learned thus far. It's a helpful way to incorporate what you've learned.

This is a really fun and educational book to help you as parents teach your babies how to communicate via sign language while they are still non-verbal. Both of my children enjoy learning new signs and our communication has been made quite a bit easier.
