This is a review for cutting someone else’s hair. I did not use it to cut my own hair. My husband has very thick, salt and pepper hair. It had grown pretty long and really needed to be cut. I have never cut anyone else’s hair with the exception of trimming my own bangs—or when I trimmed bangs and cut long hair straight across the bottom for our daughters when they were small. We looked for clippers first...way too expensive and the shipping was well into next month. I watched lots of videos on YouTube about scissor cutting men’s hair. Nothing looked easy. By chance, I found this on Amazon. I watched the demo a couple of times and showed the demo to my husband. He told me to order it because the cost seemed reasonable and it was advertised to arrive in about 5 days. It arrived 2 days later. I ordered the yellow colored guides because my husband’s hair is too close in color to the gray and black sets that were also offered. I’m really glad I ordered the yellow set because the bright color makes it much easier to see his hair while cutting it. I wanted him to wet his hair first but he didn’t want to. So....I watched the demo a couple more times before I had him sit down on a kitchen chair and began cutting his dry hair. Because I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, I started with the 2 inch guide. Using everyday, basic (inexpensive) 4 inch scissors, I just went for it. I did a quick trim all over his head then switched to the 1.5 inch guide and concentrated on the back of his head and the sides. I kept using gradually smaller guides on the sides and the back of his head until I got the lengths he liked. I kept the hair at the front and the top of his head longer so he could gel and spike it a little. We were both amazed. His layers blended extremely well. It looked perfect. Really. I don’t think he’ll ever need to go back to a salon or barber shop again. If we use this set of tools twice, it will pay for itself. The set comes in a sturdy, reusable, transparent, zip-slide closure bag with a pamphlet that offers some basic instructions and pictures. Each guide has the size imprinted into the plastic. Kind of hard to see but definitely readable and the numbers will not rub off. The (included) comb is large and easy to hold and use. There is a row of openings (like a ladder) that run down part of the comb. The guides have nubbins with hooks on one end that you fit into the openings. Then you slide the guide up ever so slightly upwards in the holes until you hear a locking “click.” Now you’re ready to start cutting. It’s really that easy. Before you cut, make sure that the bottom of the guide rests upright against the scalp and be sure to only cut the hair that is sticking between the teeth of the comb. You start by “scooping” the hair upwards with the comb (like you’re combing your hair against the flow), then you twist your wrist until you align the guide upright against the scalp. Then cut. Repeat process over and over again all over the areas of the head you want to cut. The guides are for placing the comb at an equal distance from the head before every cut you make. You don’t cut hair through the guide itself, you cut the ends of the hair that stick through the teeth of the comb. Watch the demo on Amazon. It was brief and very helpful. I was very nervous before I started my husband’s haircut. After I actually began cutting and I saw how easy it was to do and how accurately the cutting was actually going, I relaxed a lot and cut away. I will have absolutely no hesitation using these guides in the future. Next time I’ll know what guides work best and I won’t have to experiment. Wonderful product: This kit offers a really good selection of sizes. We found it great for cutting hair short as well as for leaving up to 2.5 inch length layers. It’s easy to use. Easy to assemble and to clean (we washed it in the sink). The guides and comb are made of sturdy, heavy plastic and have soft edges. The comb and guides didn’t scratch my husband’s scalp. Everything comes packaged in a thick, transparent reusable pouch with a zip-glide opening. You can take it anywhere...toss it into a suitcase, briefcase or purse, etc. It seems expensive at first glance but (for us) it will definitely pay for itself. I paid full price for this item and I’m offering my own opinions and review after actually using it. Good luck and fearless hair cutting!

First haircut with the CombPal was a success! My husband has thick stubborn hair but this enabled me to cut his hair with (mostly) ease. It's a bit overpriced but it's helpful so I'm very glad I purchased it. Go CombPal!

I've been cutting my own hair since the pandemic and have been searching for tools that make the process not only easier but take less time. I am happy to have found this comb combo. I have only ever used this on myself and that's why I gave it 3 stars for "ease of use". It takes some practice to align your scissors with the edge of the comb, but don't give up! I am now able to consistently give myself quality cuts where I don't worry about one side being longer (or shorter!) than the other side. I put the longer comb on for the front of my head and blend it with the shorter comb attachments for the back. I don't use this on the sides of my head, but I suppose you could. (I use my trimmer and guards for that.)

The CombPal is a great idea. It takes time to get used to when doing yourself. I've used it 4 times now and seems to be getting easier each time. Problem is twofold. First, you must be careful to hold the comb the same way all around the head. Any slight angle difference, you will cut at a different length. Secondly, its not easy to cut the back of your head on your own. Also, if you have thin or fine hair, you might want to put some product in your hair to give it some body. This might be a great tool if someone else can help or give you the haircut like in the videos. I purchased because of COVID months ago and have stuck with it but not sure if I will now that COVID restrictions are being lifted.

I’ve been trimming my own hair since the Covid19 pandemic shut down my state. We are open now, but I’m not ready to return to non essential events, and spending a lot of time so close to another person doesn’t sound like a safe idea. I’m a woman and I have short, thick, fast growing hair. Previously I was using my fingers to guide the lengths to cut off, but that’s really tricky on the back part and I nearly cut myself or stabbed myself several times. This comb with guide attachments solves that problem. It takes some practice to figure out what’s the best angle to cut at, but with patience and a three way mirror I’m able to do the entire cut myself. It’s much safer since I don’t have my fingers exposed - I just cut what sticks out above the comb. Overall it’s makes for a more even cut since the guides stay constant as I worked all around my head - sometimes with my fingers I think I squished down more or cut higher in spots since I was afraid to cut myself. Watching the videos helped me figure out where to start changing the lengths of my hair. I’m super pleased with my first try using this, and I can see how it will get faster and easier with practice. I had realistic expectations - this is nowhere near as good a haircut as I would get from my stylist, but he has 30 years of experience and I have 6 weeks of self taught skills. On the face of it the price seems expensive since it is just a comb and some guides, but in the long run I’m saving by not paying for a haircut (or risking exposure to Covid). Therefore it has paid for itself in just one use. One tip - I purposely bought the yellow version so it would be easier to see my hair against it in the mirror. My dark hair would have been difficult to see on the black version.

Ordered this yesterday, and it arrived TODAY~! I couldn't be happier....just tried it out on myself, and was able to go from shoulder length hair to a really cute A line bob....I need more practice....but it came out really cute for a first try~!! Tomorrow will be hubby's turn~! I give this gadget an A+++++++++ **UPDATE** Over the past few months, I've given my husband (hater of haircuts) 2 AMAZING cuts 100% using this tool and his hair cuts came out PERFECT both times. I sectioned the top of his hair off and clipped, used the 1.5 inch guide to cut all around the sides and back, then used the 2" guide to do the top.... I just kept combing hair up, and snipping anything that stuck through the comb until I couldn't find any more hair to snip~!! HE LOVES IT~!! Next time I'll try and get a little fancier and use a smaller guide to go around the nape of his neck, but with only 2 guides his hair looks perfectly cut with beautiful layers and a perfect blend from the top to the sides~!! AGAIN....A+++++ TOTALLY WORTH THE $$

Not easy to use. It is difficult to put togther and then angle it to cut hair unless you can trust someone to do it for you . I just found it easier to do it the old way without all these attachments. Then It doesn't come with a storage bag to store it all. You 'll have to buy a bag to put it all in. It does take up time to sort and figure out which size attachment you need next as you go through your layering of the hair. Videos make it look easier than it really is. I didn't get the same results and I cut hair all the time. Now I have a bunch of useless plastic attachments I don't use or really want laying around taking up space. The scissors are okay nothing fancy.

At first I didn't like this product and didn't think it worked because my hair would slip through the tines. But someone else explained that the hair is probably already as short as the guide I was using. I think that is valid. Also, my hair is thin and fine and if I just push the comb through it, it doesn't stand up. But if I place the tines of the comb at a tilt down at the scalp and then push just a little forward and lift up, the hair does lift up better and I can see what needs trimming. Also, if the hair is wet or has just a little bit of gel on it, it lifts better. It take several times to get it all even, but I does a better job than just me holding a section of hair with my fingers and trying to get an even length. However, I think I can hold a regular comb under the hair in the front, make sure it is at an even height and then cut the hair off that is sticking out. But, for the back, this device may be easier. I will see the next time I cut my hair and update the three stars if need be. Right now I will keep this, but am not overly thrilled with it. If I find the tool gets easier to use, I will update the review. Being quarantined due to Covid 19 made me cut my hair in the first place. It really doesn't look too awful, but if this helps, I'll be happy. I just tell people I have a Quarantine Cut. A good trimmer with guards is the best answer but they are expensive. I have a beard trimmer with one 1/2" guard I use around the bottom and that works.

Earlier in lockdown I cut my own hair - quite short and it was a bit uneven but as I have curly hair it didn't show too badly until it started to grow. While I was doing it I wished for something that would allow me to cut it the same length all over. I have now found that thing! This is very clever - you use the normal toothed comb through your hair, twist it up until the long prongs sit on your scalp. Your hair that is in the comb is held however far away from your scalp you want it (depending on which set of prongs you choose). You then trim your hair along the top of the comb. I didn't look at the video - the photos on the short instructions were quite clear. It can be a bit more tricky on one side of your head than the other at first, and I found it was sometimes easier to hold the non-handle end of the thing, but it worked! Even doing the back of my head was fine. Even though I couldn't see it, I was able to move the comb into place as above, then clamp my hair between two fingers either above or below the comb, depending on reach, remove the comb and cut where the comb had been, and know it was the right length. I went for the 2.5 inch guide - that's the longest - and it looks great. I've been asking hairdressers just to cut my hair the same length all over for years and they've never quite believed that was what I wanted. It was a bit fiddly but I reckon I'll get better at it each time. I think if you used it on someone else (do ask permission first!) it would be very very easy.

Vraiment pratique

As Hair Salons in Ontario have been closed since March 15th due to the Pandemic, my last haircut was in February. I normally go to the hairdressers for a cut every 5 weeks or so. I watched the CombPal video many, many times before I got the courage to try it myself. The only part of my hair I have ever cut were the bangs and I did a really bad job of that. The CombPal was easy to use and makes super nice layers...my hair does not look chopped off or uneven...the layers are nicely blended. It took about 20 minutes. Love this product....pays for itself with one cut! (Normally I pay my hairdresser $28 + tip).
