MAGNIFICENT!
A magnificent volume, by far the best of its kind I've seen (and I've seen a lot of them) with several unexpected gems as well as the usual ones which have already been covered well enough. Engaging, informative text and really superb photography by the best man there is for this kind of thing. A coffee table book which deserves to be read - and will be.

Great Houses Good Job
Great Houses isn't just about the great houses of Lomdon it includes noteworthy houses of the professional classes too. Great palaces and mansions of the aristocracy and the nouveau riche yes, and the more domestic houses of artists, architects etc. This book addresses a gap in the literature, their country bretheren and well documented but the houses of London have been strangeley neglected. The history appearance of each house is briefly described the illustrations are gorgeous If you enjoy interior design magazines or just riffling throught the property pages of Country life, you'll enjoy this book.

The hidden glory of London buildings
The book is by any standard an extremely large coffee table book. The photographs are beautifully laid out along with detailed descriptions of the buildings shown in the book. Having heard the author speak on the book at the Cheltenham Literature Festival I was slightly disappointed that there were not more properties found to include in the book. Fox example I think more Embassies could have been included since they occupy some prestige sites in London. Mr. Stourton as Chairman of Sotheby's obviously has many contacts within London society and produced a book that was sadly lacking in the library of books on current London.

Excellent
This is an expensive book but well worth the money if you are interested in great houses. The photographs are brilliant and the text throws a fascinating light on the history of each house. It is surprising how many great houses there are in London and this book allows us to see inside many houses which are never open to the public.

A Sumptuous Coffee-Table Book
A beautiful coffee-table book; most suitable for a Christmas present! It contains photos of great houses in London, some of which, like Lancaster House and No 10 Downing Street, are very well-known indeed. Others, like Malplaquet House in the East End are not; yet their unassuming facades conceal interiors of breathtaking beauty, splendour or eccentricity.

A wonderful coffee table book
I recently bought this book for an Australian girlfriend of mine who was visiting the UK. I loved it so much that I bought a copy for myself as well. It makes me proud to be British! The book has been very well researched with beautiful photographs. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading about some of our lesser known buildings within the capital.

The title truly speaks for the contents of this attractive book. It is large, very well bound and documents over 40 houses across London. Each house is given 4-6 pages with a brief text at the beginning summarizing the history and architectural significance of each one of them. The photos are the true star of this book, and it is generously loaded with hundreds of large bright color photographs showing the immaculate architectural details and rich interiors, all the houses get 1-2 external views as well. Most of the houses chosen rarely appeared before and the photos are specially commissioned for this book making it a beautiful addition to any architecture library and would also make a stunning coffee-table book.

Especially the text gives a lot of Information and - together with the good photos - a very good insight into these houses you usually will not be able to look at.

Having been to London twice in my life, I often went by regal homes, and tidy facades, wondering what was inside. This volume takes you there. Of the many houses featured, there is ample text to explain the provenance of the place, and the photography is as outstanding as the magnificance of the architecture, the extreme detail, and the sheer beauty of staircases, dining rooms, drawing rooms and libraries. After looking at this book, you understand completely why Churchill was so adamant that he would not preside over the decline of the British Empire. Remove from your mind the ideas of property taxes and maintenance and simply enjoy what is presented in this wonderful work. The small purchase price of this great work is nothing in significance to the treats that will unfold before you. Highly recommend.
