They are fine to paint on we used just a water based paint and had no issues. The mask is Matt so easy to paint onto

No they are not, far from it, unless your a child sized adult anyway.

Are these made of thick plastic and not likely to snap or break?

Not plastic, paper machine, dont break easy. Recommended.
