DIY Murphy Bed Queen Kit | Horizontal Wall Bed with Deluxe Mechanism & Bonus Tools

I constructed this by myself with solid wood products from Home Depot. I also did all of my cuts with a circular saw and makeshift stands to hold the wood. The quality of the kit is phenomenal. The instructions were pretty clear and decently easy to follow. The size of my kit was a queen frame, and it is a very solid piece of furniture bolted into the wall. It works perfectly as a pulldown, although for some people, depending on the wood you choose, it may be heavy to lift up and down. My wife is able to do pull it down and she is 5’6 and athletic build just as reference. This did take me two days to put together, but if I had a table saw and stands to hold the wood I imagine I could have flown through this project. The bed has been assembled for over a year now and pulling it down/pushing it down has remained consistent with no changes.

Good quality but instructions aren't as accurate as they should be

You do need to have woodworking tools and skill. The instructions were pretty good. On the cut list, the measurements did not match on one sheet, printing error. And another spot it said to use 1 1/4 screws to connect a 2x2 to a 3/4” ply……ya, use 2”😅. And you don’t need to band everything they say. But unless you have intimate knowledge of the parts, you’re just going to have to band everything. And one or two smaller print mistakes like if you want a twin support rod, it’s not 39” like in the book, if it sounds fishy read shared and make your decision. Customer service is very quick to respond. I asked them if I could take 2 singles and make a bunk and if they had plans for that. They said, no, do not make a bunk out of it. As you can see in the pictures, I did it anyway. I made a couple modifications. 1- side boards are double tall so it’s one piece. 2- reversed the legs on the top bunk for a roll bar….. not sure that was worth it 🤷‍♀️. I painted before I put together because it is way easier to paint before hardware and corners are created. I painted one side of each banded board. And I read ahead and found a few more un-banded boards that would need paint. This project did take me working for several days (I do get interrupted a lot). The instructions were easy to follow. The video was helpful, but super annoying not to have words. Maybe people complained about the audio before🤷‍♀️. Yes, I recommend this item.

This company did an awesome job putting together an excellent product! It came with very detailed, and easy to read and understand instruction pamphlets. One pamphlet outlined the materials you need and a very detailed cut sheet on exact sizes to cut every piece needed. The other pamphlet is a detailed step by step instruction sheet on how to build your Murphy bed. Also they have tutorials online to view if you need more help. I can’t say enough how impressed with the quality of the product as well as the instructions. I did not follow the instructions to the letter, as I did not want to build mine out of plywood. I am a furniture builder and I love exotic wood, so I had to change some of the measurements to get the end product that I wanted. But the information provided, allowed me to make adjustments as I needed along the way. Great company, great product and it works perfect!

This kit is marketed as a home DIY friendly build, but in my opinion, not for a complete beginner or some one who has done little to no wood working skills. Even for two people who have a lot of experience with working with tools this was not as DIY friendly as it is marketed. Firstly, the total cost of materials including the kit was more than we had originally planned for; about $500, not including the tools we already had (Miter saw, power drill, table saw). The shopping list part of the instructions was clear and concise, but after getting the wood cut down to the right dimensions we had quite a bit of leftover lumber. This was useful when we had to redo 1-2 cuts, but overall it seems a bit inefficient. Which brings me to my next point, the building instructions. Part of the instructions had fully drilled and partially drilled holes, but due to the convoluted directions we made a mistake and had to recut some of the wood. Another section did not explain how to install the hydraulics correctly, they were extremely stiff and eventually learned that the bed must be closed to install them but is not notated properly. Overall, it took us about 3 days to put the bed together. It would have been faster if we did not have to make the majority of the cuts ourselves. The video in the product description says his local hardware store (Home Depot) had them cut the lumber down for him but that was not our experience as they don't do project cuts. In the end, we are happy with the end result but if we were to build another murphy bed it will not be from this company.
