Yes it can and the batteries can be left in whist using mains. Furthermore, the batteries are standard AA size and rechageables work.

It's a radio not a battery charger so I don't think so

can this be used anywhere in the world?

Not really uk has 87.5 to 108 MHz FM radio : this radio is for that market usa has 88 to 108 MHz - so would work there I guess japan has 76 - 95 Mhz, as their TV channels are above that eastern europe and russia have had the lower 'OIRT' FM range 65 - 74 MHz - as they have bigger distances, the lower MHz travel further

Can the radio be switched on by just turning the plug socket on and off, or do you have to turn it on at the radio.

If the radio is in the on position you can switch on at the mains.
