Excellent doorbell with a few minor issues
I installed this by hardwiring it. The setup was easy for both the doorbell and its chime. It is working great. The video image is an ultra wide angle fisheye view. This means that people that are within say 10' are very clear but those that are further away appear quite small and when magnified lack clarity. This is fine for viewing people at your door but if you want to use this doorbell camera as a security camera for your yard it may not be the best choice. I have set up the doorbell for person and package detection and it works excellent for person and package detection. The one issue that I am having is that when I select "Doorbell Mode" in the Night Mode settings, which turns on the doorbell spotlight when the doorbell is pressed so that you can see a colored video of the person at your door, doesn't turn off automatically like it is supposed to when there isn't any motion detected. My D225 leaves doorbell spotlight on which disables the infrared LEDs. This compromises night motion detection. I have to go into the TP-Link app to turn it off by changing the night mode setting to "infrared Mode". I would like this to work without me having to manually turn it off. I am hoping that this is a software issue that can be fixed via an update. The doorbell on my house was installed several feet to the side of my door and there are 5 stairs leading up to the door. In order to get the camera to point in the right direction I had to use both of the included wedges. Unfortunately they weren't designed to be stackable. I got around this by gluing the two wedges together using Testors plastic cement. Overall I would recommend this doorbell camera. I would rate it at 4.5* because of the night mode issue mentioned above but gave it 5* because of its value and easy install.

Definitive Ring killer! Impressive features with zero subscription fees.
I am very impressed with this doorbell—it is definitely a Ring killer! The standout feature is that it requires absolutely no subscription. You can use an SSD for local storage, or pair it with the Tapo H500 hub for a massive storage upgrade and advanced AI face-tracking capabilities. It is great that they still offer optional cloud storage if you happen to want it, but you don't need it.I also really love that it includes a plug-in wireless chime/bell that you can place anywhere in your house so you never miss a ring. Overall, a fantastic, high-performing device!

Better and cheaper for me than the Ring Doorbell it replaced
Replaced a Ring doorbell which never quite worked right. (Voltage was a little too low for it, I think). More than anything I got tired of the annual subscription taking money (lately it's been $50/yr). This one doesn't care about the voltage and you don't have to have a subscription if you don't want to. It came online right away. Installation was straight forward except for a little trial and error with the installation plates that came with them. I ended up stacking both plates where one was for the angle caused by the siding and the other was to angle the camera towards the door a bit. The view with both plates is excellent. The functionality works really nice. Glad that when someone rings the doorbell, the app pops up on my phone and looks like a phone call coming in. That's really nice. Only thing I'd ask them to change is to have a cancel button instead of having to answer it to silence it. (Just had my first caller and I was going to walk over to open the door instead of talking through the doorbell. Would be nice to not have to answer in the app.) Another minor issue is that both my wife and I are linked to the doorbell. If someone rings the doorbell, it will ring both of our phones. If I answer it, it will continue to ring my wifes phone or vice versa. I wish they'd just silence it on both phones once it is answered in either phone - maybe with a notification that it was answered to the other phone.) I've seen this issue mentioned in forums so it is a known thing. Sound quality is good. Video quality is good. The phone software (apple iphone) is good. Nothing else to complain about. I recommend this phone without reservations.

Best doorbell so far
This works way better than my Ring doorbell. It actually catches movement and notifies me. My Ring worked great for years, but over time my doorbell and outdoor cameras weren't catching movement as much. Or my notifications would be delayed by up to a minute, sometimes more. With my Tapo, I can set which notifications I want for movement. I suggest setting it, because it is so good at catching movement mine was going off every second. I have mine sent to just people. You have the option for pets, vehicles, and I think just all movement in general. I love how the camera view is wide so that you can see more. I am using an SD card instead of paying for a subscription. I am able to view all of my notifications via the app and live view with no problem. The one thing that is different from Ring, is that my notifications do not have a preview that pops up on my phone. I have to open the notification to view it. But, the view of who rings my doorbell instantly pops up on my Amazon Show. You can have a preview on your phone of notifications if you pay for the subscription. But, honestly with how great this works, it doesn't bother me that I can't have a preview of the notifications on my phone. I highly recommend this doorbell. I have recently started using Tapo's electronic door locks, smart light bulbs and switches. I will be taking down my Ring outdoor cameras in a couple of days to put up the Tapo outdoor cameras that I bought with their solar panels. I am loving this brand!

Excellent Value!
Excellent video doorbell. Running on battery and lasts forever. Have had it for several months now and still have over 50% battery left. Love that you record to sd card and dont have to pay a subscription. Also, you can adjust sensitivity, which is nice when you have cars driving by so it doesnt set it off constantly. Would highly recommend!

From Competent Smart Doorbell to Defective Passive Camera: Firmware-Induced Obsolescence
The Tapo Smart Video Doorbell (2K QHD) originally met its technical specifications, providing adequate image quality and local smart home integration capabilities. However, a recent mandatory firmware update has severely degraded the device, stripping away its core alert functionalities and reducing it to an unreliable passive camera. Furthermore, TP-Link’s post-purchase support imposes predatory logistical barriers on international Amazon buyers, rendering the written warranty effectively null and void. Technical Analysis: Critical Software Regression The device operated optimally until the latest automated firmware distribution, which introduced severe code regressions that cannot be resolved via factory resets or clean reinstalls: Local API Breakdown (Home Assistant): Critical binary entities required for automation—specifically doorbell press, motion detection, and person detection—have completely vanished from the integration's entity registry. The firmware update effectively blocked local polling endpoints, eliminating advanced smart home interoperability. Hardware Chime Synchronization Failure: The RF/Wi-Fi link between the outdoor doorbell button and the indoor physical chime fails intermittently. Pressing the physical button regularly results in zero audible alerts inside the house. Push Notification Inhibition: Real-time push alerts and VoIP routing to registered mobile devices are either heavily delayed or completely dropped, rendering the device useless for immediate access monitoring. Technical Verdict: The product has ceased to function as a reliable access control or security system. It now operates solely as a passive IP camera, failing at its core advertised purpose. Support and Warranty Analysis: The Logistical Barrier Reporting this software-induced defect to TP-Link revealed an anti-consumer support structure designed to exhaust the user through financial friction: Support Redirection Loop: The customer is forced into a loop between regional support (Colombia) and originating support (US), evading technical diagnostic accountability. Cost-Negative RMA Framework: To address a 100% software-based bug, support demands a physical hardware return (RMA). International Amazon customers must pay for cross-border freight to a US warehouse, establish a US freight forwarder, and finance the re-shipping and import fees back to their country. Financial Invability: The total logistical cost to execute this warranty exceeds the net retail value of the product itself. It is financially more rational to throw the device in the trash than to pay the manufacturer to replace it with identical hardware that will update to the same broken firmware. Refund Denial: TP-Link explicitly refuses to issue direct financial refunds or Amazon credits, citing a lack of direct consumer transaction infrastructure, thereby shifting the manufacturer's liability back onto the retailer. Conclusion Strong Anti-Recommendation. If you require a doorbell that reliably integrates locally with Home Assistant, or if you are purchasing via Amazon US from an international location, avoid this product. TP-Link has demonstrated that it can unilaterally strip away core advertised hardware features via post-purchase software updates without providing a viable, cost-free remedy for global consumers.

Tossed my Ring and upgraded to Tapo.
I am very impressed with this doorbell cam, and with Tapo products. I tossed my Ring doorbell as near worthless at detecting anyone, people could hold a square dance in front of it before being noticed. This Tapo is much better, and I don't need the $4 month Ring subscription. Good image, so-so audio could be better. Connection and set up are truly superior, very easy. I already have ten Tapo security cameras and they have been operating perfectly for months. I don't give this five stars because it could be better: Because i have Tapo security cams that means I already have a Tapo hub, and should be able to add the doorbell camera to that, but nope. That means all video is recorded on the onboard camera and i would prefer the hub so the images are secure from theft. Which is another thing, theft of the doorbell would be a two second thing, just rip it off the wall, and your recordings go with it. No bueno. Finally, motion detection is selectable and configurable except for something Tapo calls 'speed', and this is a constant irritant because things like headlights trigger it, and there is no way to disable speed. Still, this is a major improvement over Ring.

Excellent not just for the price.
I don't write many reviews, but I was really impressed with this doorbell camera...and this is my first ever video doorbell. I've had it installed for 2 days now and I've happily had other TP-Link smart products for years so I don't expect I'll end up disappointed based on what I've seen so far. The video quality is plenty high enough at 2K. The field of view is also great: I can see that someone is walking 3 doors down from me. Not well enough to make a full ID, but well enough to clearly make out clothing and colors. Anyone coming within actual range of your door will be easily identifiable right away. It has PLENTY of features in the Android app (from which you can also control all your home's other TP-Link/Kasa smart devices). Any customization I could think of that I wanted was available. Installation was also easy and straightforward; the most difficult (and personally troubling) part was having to drill holes in brick for mounting, and even that wasn't hard with a masonry drill bit. It came with a thick sticky foam piece to place between the brick and the mounting bracket. Seals pretty well, but I'll still run silicone sealant around the edges for added insurance. The audio is excellent, and the fact that it will ring your phone with a video call for answering the door from anywhere is another plus; no worry about missing a ring at the door. For those of you who had the big question I had...it is easily compatible with an NVR once it's hardwired. I have an LTS camera system and once I had the doorbell installed and running, it took me no more than 2 or 3 minutes to connect it. In the app's "Advanced Settings," once you have the doorbell's IP address, you can create a login and password to add to an NVR channel for recording as an IP camera. From unboxing to mounting to connecting to the NVR, it was up and running within less than an hour. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a video doorbell without a subscription who wants to add it to an already-existing home surveillance system.
