One pawn is missing a magnet, and overall magnet quality is managable and practical. Quality of wooden board and pieces is the nicest I've seen this far. Attention to detail is amazing. Each and every piece is carved to perfection.

I was a little nervous about ordering this set, as Amazon said it was a frequently returned item. I don't know what the reason for that could be, but the set I received is flawless. It is solid wood throughout, and the playing surface is made up of individual squares of wood veneer (some boards I have seen just have a single piece of wood with dyed or painted squares). Mine is the 7x7 model, and is kept closed by magnets rather than a metal latch. I think this is better, since it gives a cleaner look, and the magnets are plenty strong enough to keep it closed. The overall quality of workmanship is excellent, with smooth transitions between the two halves of the board in both open and closed positions. The chessmen themselves are very nicely made considering their small size. They are satisfyingly proportioned and easy to tell apart from each other. The magnets felt a little weak at first, but they proved to be strong enough to hold even the heavier pieces in place, even when the board was held sideways or inverted. Stronger magnets may actually be a bad thing, because it might cause the pieces to be attracted to one another and cause problems. All in all, I don't have a single bad thing to say about this set. It's an absolute bargain for the price, and I'm thinking of buying some of the other sizes. It would make an excellent gift.

I like the quality of the board, the pieces the spare queens and the foam cutouts for the pieces. I like having checkers pieces as well. I like the fast delivery. I dont.like.beo g asked to grade every single thing I buy from Amazon

A nice quality chess set. Bought it for our 9 year old grandson who spent a lot of time playing with it over the Christmas holidays. Highly recommend this product

I had given away all my chess sets years ago but recently wanted to get back into the game, at least for puzzles and replaying games. I wanted a nice wood/magnetic set for portability and found this one. The 12x12 set was the perfect size--not to small, not too big, and with the magnetic seal on the frame which I wanted rather than the clasps. (I'm sure I would have been fine with the clasps too.) It's a very nice set with that nice wood smell. The pieces stay pretty well in place although I did find out the hard way that tilting the board full vertical results in the pieces sliding off so the magnet in the board isn't as strong as the magnets in the pieces. I do worry about scratching the nice glossy surface if I travel with it so I'm keeping the original box just in case.
