800+ Mechanical Pencil and Touchscreen Stylus, Twist-to-Retract, HB 0.7 mm, Black Metal Barrel

These pencils are exemplary of the quality of rOtring products. They have a good heft, combined with a diameter only slightly greater than a wooden pencil. The knurled grip is simple but effective. And the turn-to-extend-tip feature is a lot of fun to use! A couple of important comments. These aren’t meant to be used for writing essays and love letters - they’re drafting pencils. You’d probably tire of holding them after a long writing stint, because they’re hefty, and the grip lends to control not comfort or ergonomics. But they’re fine for jotting notes, much better for drafting and sketching, and just all-around fun to have. Also - some complain as to durability. These are sturdy pencils with one exception: the tip. Once the tip is bent, the pencil is pretty useless. I have an old one that a friend gave me, and he tried to repair the tip by straightening it after it’d been bent: it breaks the lead about 50% of the time you extend it now. So - store these with the tip retracted, don’t be a complete klutz, and you’ll be fine! Can’t recommend these enough! Great pen, great gift for engineers and scientists.

My only mechanical pencil experience prior to this has been with inexpensive, disposable plastic 0.5mm and 0.7mm versions, so this is clearly a significant upgrade. The fit and finish are top-notch. Now for the subtle touches that really work for me: The pencil's body retains the familiar hexagonal shape of a common wooden pencil, but where it counts—the grip—it is rounded and tactile. Say goodbye to aching fingers from gripping a hexagonally shaped pencil! I also appreciate the retractable tip protection feature. All in all, it is a great pencil. I chose the 0.5mm because the 0.7mm, in both the cheap plastic pencils and the rOtring 0.7mm version, gives a writing feel that doesn't suit my tastes—it's almost like the lead squeaks on the page. I was concerned the 0.5mm lead would frequently break or feel scratchy while writing. Happily, neither of those issues has been observed.

I really like this pencil but it did force me to start using lead at a much shorter length than what I would typically use. If you use any more than 2 clicks the lead breaks quite often, but I also write at a slight angle, however, it's nothing extreme. ***REMOVING POCKET CLIP**** I really like the pocket clip but I like using the sharp side of the lead so I would have to hold over the clip, when twisting for shark end of lead, half the time. Removing the clip is not easy and should only be done if your certain you never want to use it again since the chances of you NOT destroying it and/or tearing the finish is very low to impossible. Theres really no instruction for on how to do this for the 800's. SO WHAT I DID was I loosened it with a pair of pliers by twisting the clip from side to side, which doesn't do much but I got it so that it was just a little loose. I heard some people were able to pull it straight off, which is what I was trying to do but it did feel like I might break then body so I read that someone else suggested oil. Heres what's good and bad about using oil, if you start with oil you may not be able to loosen it since it will likely just turn around the pencil and won't have enough friction to bend the clip while trying to twist it off but if it works the chances are better that you won't scratch the body. *I started with no oil (FYI - I don't necessarily suggest this exact method and is just how I did it so learn from my mistakes), and twisted back and forth with needle nose pliers trying to pull it off which got it a little loose to where I could twist it back and forth using my fingers. Then I used very little oil to try and pull it straight back and off. It did not come off that way though, it actually ended up sliding UP and over the knurl (where the eraser is) and came off that way, which I didn't think was even possible, since it didn't seem loose enough to do that, but with me trying to pull it straight back and off with the oil now applied, it just slide, unexpectedly, over the knurl which still took a LOT of FORCE. I did not scratch the finish over knurl area and there was (to my surprise) somewhat minimal scratches where the clip was, from when I tried removing with NO oil, but AGAIN using no oil AT FIRST created the friction I needed to allow me to use enough force to be able to bend the part of the clip, that wraps around the BODY of the pen, by twisting back and forth. *My suggestion: - Make sure you are positive that you no longer want the clip since it will likely be destroyed but if you use oil first and get lucky then you might be able to salvage it. - Patients is key to limit any scratches, - Try using a very small amount of oil first to see if you actually can make it slide over the knurl from the start (I used weathermen pliers), which if possible, will greatly reduce your chances of any scratches, but clip will still likely be scratched (unless you have pliers with silicon tips?) and will defiantly be bent but if it works this way then you can probably bend it back, if you want to. If this doesn't work at all then wipe up the oil as much as you can, which may take time (days/weeks depending on oil used?), until it is dry again and has enough friction to try

Overall its a great pencil. It feels comfortable and the knurled grip was enough to keep my fingers on it when they were sweating on a midterm. The stylus is a bit gimmicky if you're not the person who regularly uses a stylus but it is nice to have. The build quality is amazing too as it feels built like a tank (except the tip). I'm knocking a star off because the lead does break easily and the tip is fragile. Thankfully its a retractable tip so tip deformations aren't as common as the non-retractable Rotring 600. When the lead usually breaks its usually because I'm writing too hard, so a gentler writing style would suit this pencil to reduce lead breakage. I switched my writing style to be a bit more gentler and now lead breakage is mostly a non-issue. I am using 0.5 lead so breakages should be more common than the 0.7 version of this pencil. There is definitely a wobble to the pencil, but it doesn't bother me because I usually use retractable tip pencils. Overall, its a great pencil, especially for light-handed people.

I used the 800 model for over a year, and I recently purchased this one after I lost my 800 model (I'm an idiot). The packaging on this model is almost as fancy as the pencil itself compared to the last one. The mechanism problems that were apparent in the 800 model were fixed in the 800+ model, much to my delight. The mechanism extends and retracts the pencil much more smoothly than the last model and has not showed any signs of jamming from using the mechanism. It is extremely useful if you don't want to damage the tip from dropping it on the ground (which I do more than I should), or to prevent it from making holes in your shirt pockets. The text which says "800+ | 0.5 mm" is slightly bigger than on the 800 model and of a different font (Helvetica / Arial maybe?). Not sure how I feel about that; the original slanted squarish font felt more industrial and sleek, but those are minor details. The build quality is as I would expect from rotring: it's an absolute joy to hold and perfect for long writing sessions or drawing. The texture on the grip, the metal hexagon, and the red ring shows the industrial design language of rotring very well and makes long sessions of note-taking so much more interesting. (Using the original 800 was one of the reasons I got through English class without being bored to death.) The touchscreen tip works well with my iPad but I have not yet tested it for long periods of use so I cannot give a complete analysis on that. Edit: Upon further use, the stylus is, as the other reviewer already said, a bit unwieldy. The grip is a bit low for a stylus, the response is somewhat inaccurate, and it sometimes sticks to the screen. In the end, the stylus is interesting to play with for a while, but impractical for conventional use. All in all, although this pencil will make quite a dent in your wallet, I feel that it is well worth the price given its sturdy construction and superior mechanisms. It will most likely last me years if I don't do anything stupid, like drop it on the ground and bend the tip into an L shape, or lose it (but knowing me I probably will).

Solid, stout and thoughtfully designed and executed. Solid high grade materials throughout but the genius is in the design. Rotate the barrel near the eraser end and stainless steel sleeve that holds the pencil lead is extended to look and function just like any other mechanical pencil. Rotate it back and the sleeve/lead is drawn back into the aircraft aluminum barrel. For someone who appreciates innovative technology in dime a dozen devices this is extremely cool. Obviously a product of German mechanical design genius and up to Rotring’s world renowned standards of quality craftsmanship.

I bought this in November of 22 with high expectations. Sadly after just a year it was in the garbage can. It was never dropped and used very sparingly. From reviews here and elsewhere what failed is an all to common problem. The twist knob that extends and retracts the tip has a spring with way to much compression strength (IMHO) and breaks off the plastic piece that it rides along inside to extends and retract the tip , there are multiple pictures here in the reviews that show the same problem I encountered. I really wanted to completely like this pen, it has a great feel and ergonomics to it, but one major flaw for a $$$ pencil.

This is a fantastic mechanical pencil. Expensive but worth it! I am using for artistic drawing for very fine lines. This mechanical pencils work with Rotring and Faber Castel leads. I started to buy one mechanical pencil with o.5mm HB leads. I ended buying two others for 2B and 2H Faber Castel leads. Just love drawing with them! Rotring should offer more options with the leads. Additionally, it will be nice if there was an area to indicate the reference of the lead i.e., HB, 2B and 2H. To get around this issue, I taped a little paper with the reference of the lead in an area where I do not place my fingers. It doesn't look very nice but It is a quick fix to quickly identify each of my mechanical pencils.
