Recommend to get a tool like this to check tire tread depth. The penny method is OK to judge safety of tires but if you want to properly monitor, you need a real gauge like this.My tires showed that they are wearing unevenly (as all tires do since you are never perfectly making as many left turns as right turns, etc). My results alerted me that even though I am under recommended schedule, my tires need to be rotated.I tired both gauges and they displayed identical results so I am relatively confident in their calibration.Good tool and easy to use. Easiest way is to insert into portion of tread that isn't covered by wheel well (front or back side / bottom). Push down until gauge is fully extended- get the reading. Anything under 2/32" is bald and needs replaced. 3-4" is borderline and need to start looking to replace.It is a good and simple tool at a fair price. Small and easy to store in the car or toolbox / garage. I def recommend

I just bought a new car and wanted to check the tire wear. I'm also in the market for new to me used snow tires so I've been taking this on the prowl with me and I've found it very helpful. Needless to say I'm still on the lookout for the tires I want.
