Question 1

i understand "RAAB" type broccoli is from the turnip family rather than the cabbage family so just wondered if these sprouts contain sulfurophane?

Accepted Answer

First off, no seeds contain sulforphane, but some including broccoli seeds contains Glucoraphanin which converts enzymatically to Sulforohpane when eaten. Raab does NOT contain any significant level of glucoraphanin https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14969551

Question 2

Can anyone tell me the difference between Brocolli seeds and broccoli rabb or are they similar.Just noticed on packet it says rab.

Accepted Answer

Broccoli raab is not strictly broccoli. I have read that it is more closely related to a turnip.
If you are after broccoli seeds to sprout for their sulforophane content then broccoli raab seeds do still contain some, but how much it is very hard to say, research is hard to come by. As are proper broccoli seeds. It seems that suppliers have cottened on to the demand and have upped their prices.

If you are after simple broccoli seeds I think you need de ciccio seeds.

Question 3

Do you have to disinfect the seeds before growing them ?

Accepted Answer

No you do what it says on the packet, wash them for four days then eat them ,

Question 4

The calabrese is the healthiest type - is this calabrese?

Accepted Answer

Both Calabrese and Raab varieties of broccoli sprouts are known to be healthy, however, the nutritional content can vary slightly depending on the variety of broccoli sprouting seed that is used.

Calabrese broccoli is the most common variety of broccoli. It is known to have high levels of Vitamin C, Vitamin K and Vitamin A. It also contains a good amount of dietary fiber, potassium, and folate.

Raab broccoli is also known as broccoli raab, rapini, or broccoli rape. It's a leafy green vegetable that is a member of the Brassica family, like broccoli. It's a good source of vitamin C, vitamin K, and vitamin A, as well as potassium, folate, and dietary fiber. It's also high in antioxidants, specially glucosinolates
