For sheer guts, the Redcoats' behaviour at Bunker Hill, Saratoga and other bloody encounters has rarely been surpassed. The Americans won, but only just, and then thanks to foreign intervention and a small number of dedicated and valiant patriots who were continually let down by their own people. Robin May's splendid work looks at the British Army that fought in the American Revolution from 1775 to1783. It details the soldiers who faced the difficulties of campaigning in America along with the gross inefficiency and corruption at home which, along with their generals' often blundering conduct, were as deadly enemies as the Americans. Review: Excellent - Excellent Review: Excellent update of an already excellent book - Excellent artwork updates that compliment the original book. The British are coming...
The experience of the British Army in the American Revolution was a mixed one. The conflict pitted the King's Army against fellow Englishmen for the fate of the thirteen colonies. The British Army won most of its battles, but lost the war, at least in part because it simply wasn't large enough or well enough supplied. "The British Army in North America 1775-83" is an Osprey Men-at-Arms Series book, authored by Robin May with illustrations by Gerry Embleton. It opens with an interesting look at the American Revolution from a British point of view, followed by a discussion of the British Army of the period, caught in one of its periodic downsizings between major European conflicts. The balance of the book covers some details of uniforms. There are some nice color plates of uniform types. The text includes a listing of the regiments that served in North American during the period, and some very interesting information about the limited diet of the troops. The author's conversational prose will likely be very accessible to the general reader. Recommended as a very short introduction to the topic.
