Question 1

What trees and shrubs are these spikes designed for?

Accepted Answer

These spikes are formulated specifically for northern trees and shrubs — such as maple, birch, oak, dogwood, and boxwood — that commonly suffer from iron, manganese, and sulfur deficiencies.

Question 2

What is the nutrient formula?

Accepted Answer

The 8-10-10 formula contains: Nitrogen (8%), Phosphate (10%), Potash (10%), Sulfur (4.8%), Iron (3.3%), and Manganese (3.2%). The balanced blend supports leaf, root, and overall plant health.

Question 3

How long does one application last?

Accepted Answer

Each spike uses a slow-release formula that feeds continuously for up to 12 months, so you only need to apply once per year.

Question 4

How do I apply the spikes?

Accepted Answer

Simply insert the spikes into the soil near the root zone of trees or shrubs — no measuring, mixing, or special tools required.

Question 5

How many spikes do I use per tree?

Accepted Answer

The number of spikes depends on the size of the tree. Refer to the package label for guidance based on your tree's trunk diameter or drip line size.

Question 6

How close to the trunk should I insert the spikes?

Accepted Answer

Place spikes near the root zone (dripline area), not directly against the trunk, to ensure nutrients reach active roots effectively.

Question 7

Will these spikes burn my trees or over-fertilize them?

Accepted Answer

The slow-release design minimizes the risk of over-fertilization, making them safe for gardeners of all experience levels.

Question 8

Are these spikes safe for pets and children?

Accepted Answer

Keep out of reach of children and pets. Always wear gloves when handling, and store in a cool, dry place away from heat sources.

Question 9

Can I use these on acid-loving plants?

Accepted Answer

Yes — the elemental sulfur (4.8%) helps lower soil pH, which enhances the uptake of iron and manganese, making these spikes well-suited for acid-loving trees and shrubs.

Question 10

Are these organic?

Accepted Answer

The product is listed with an organic special feature, but always check the label or contact the manufacturer for full organic certification details.

Question 11

How are these different from Lutz Palm Spikes?

Accepted Answer

The non-Palm (Perfect Tree) formula uses an 8-10-10 blend with nitrogen, phosphate, potash, sulfur, iron, and manganese for northern trees and shrubs. The Palm formula contains nutrients specifically blended for palms and ferns.

Question 12

Can these be used year-round?

Accepted Answer

Yes — because each spike lasts up to 12 months, a single annual application is sufficient. Best applied at the start of the growing season.

Question 13

Do these work in all soil types?

Accepted Answer

These spikes are designed to deliver nutrients directly to the root zone regardless of soil type, though they work especially well in soils where pH adjustment is needed for nutrient uptake.

Question 14

What makes Lutz spikes different from brands like Jobe's or Miracle-Gro?

Accepted Answer

Lutz spikes offer a 12-month continuous feed (vs. seasonal reapplication every 3–6 months for Jobe's or Miracle-Gro), include iron and manganese to combat northern tree deficiencies, and feature an 8-10-10 formula with sulfur for specific tree types.

Question 15

Where can I buy more or get a larger pack?

Accepted Answer

The spikes come in a 40-count pack and are available on Amazon. A 125-count pack is also available for the Palm formula.
