Q: Are these peeled and fermented?

All cacao beans are fermented first before being shipped, so yes, they are fermented. They are not, however roasted or peeled. You'll need to roast and then peel (winnow) them.

Q: Can you eat these raw?

I work in one of only about 50 bean-to-bar chocolate-making companies in the United States. You really shouldn't eat these raw, despite what many people will say. Trust me; I hand sort raw beans every day. Raw cacao is fermented on the jungle floor and generally tests high for salmonella, listeria, and e coli. Unless this company is actually lightly roasting the beans to kill germs, there is no guarantee they are safe to eat in this raw state. It's like eating raw chicken. You can definitely do it, and you won't necessarily get sick, but it's really risky. But if you buy these and pop them in the oven at 325-350 for 20-25 minutes, you'll have a nice snack that's super high in flavinols, antioxidants, good fats, and theobromine! Highly recommend that :)

Q: Can these be planted? Will they grow?

Hello Richard, This product is intended for human consumption and is not guaranteed to germinate, as it goes through a air pressure and steam process to reduce the microbiological content and have them ready to eat out of the bag.

Q: Do you need to roast them to make chocolate?

Yes... about 40-60 munutes on a low heat. Raw tastes soury and if you want to eat them or make somethung out of them, you need to roast them first, you will feel how taste changes in the process.
