Great story, well told and beautifully illustrated
This is a wonderful book to read and a wonderfully illustrated one too. My son, like me, is obsessed with airplanes. So this was a Christmas present and we've read it twice already. It's not gory at all and is filled with cleverly placed and illustrated facts that support the main story being told. The story is clearly personal to the author and it's told like his father was telling him the story. It's well written, clear but concise and a good length for shorter attention spans. The illustrations though are lovely, entertaining and keep interest flowing. Highly recommended, I'm sure we'll be reading it many more times and it may even prove useful in years to come for history coursework.

Good but disappointing too.
I bought this book, mainly for myself, (but also for my kids) as it sounded interesting. However I was quite disppointed that it was published in comic bbok style and has really very little information in it. I was really looking forward to some amusing anecdotes and some real life experiences, if this is what your looking for too i'm afraid to say that I wouldn't bother with this book. Whilst it has a few (very few) interesting facts, there is nothing new that you can't find in other books. It is definately a book for the younger readers, my six year old found it a nice read, but my 10 and 13 year old, like me, wanted more.

Real and personal insight into WW2 flying life for both children and adults
Loved this book. Written and illustrated so well by Mick Manning and Brita Granström- such an insight into what it must've been like for Charlie.

Fantastic History come to Life
Well I can only say that any book that makes History alive and fun is a winner; but this Book goes beyond that.We even gave a copy to one of our freinds, whom served as a Tailgunner and Gunner Instructor durinng WWI.So hopefully his children's children will enjoy it too.

Very useful book for children to research the ww2 topic.

Disappointing
Although this is a nice book for children, it is a disappointment from my research point of view into the role of the rear gunner of a Lancaster Bomber in WW2.

We will remember them
A son's fascinating tribute to a father who nearly paid the ultimate price in defence of freedom. A wonderfully illustrated album of one airman's journey to war and back. Young people will learn a little bit of history and perhaps why they call this the 'greatest generation.' Such indeed is the way to the stars.

Loved it- thank you :-)
Happened across this book via the Bomber Command Facebook site. Reading the reviews made this a must have and I was not disappointed. Great story, good mix of cartoon with the reality of the situation facing these brave men, caught in a situation not of their choosing. Having spent a lot of time identifying a specific Halifax bomber found in Albania- and managing to do so solely because of the wedding ring of the tailgunner that was found later at the crash site, this was a compelling book to obtain. My kids (both girls) picked it up and just started reading... "so is this what the guy with the ring did dad?".. can't argue with that!
