Product Description Academy Award and Golden Globe Recipient Judy Garland was and still is a super star of her time. She was the consummate performer, starring in over 40 films, Judy Garland had no limits to her singing and acting talents that included radio, theatre, television, and film. She also starred in her own television series "The Judy Garland Show." Pioneer Entertainment is proud to present "The Judy Garland Show" on DVD. These four episodes, Shows #24, #25, #8 and #19, which originally aired between 1963 and 1964 include outtakes and special commentary with Norman Jewisonon Show 8. Judy welcomes guests, Vic Damone, Robert Cole, George Maharis, Jack Carter, The Dillards, Leo Durocher, Jerry Van Dyke, Louis Jourdan, The Kirby Stone Four, and Ken Murray. .com Almost 40 years after her death, Judy Garland remains one of the major cultural icons of the 20th century. In this continuing series of DVD releases, you get the opportunity to revisit her rarely seen TV show, which featured Garland at the peak of her comeback powers--but also at the beginning of a steep decline prior to her death in 1969. The fourth in this series of rereleases of The Judy Garland Show (which died after one year of being murdered in the ratings by Bonanza), this double-sided DVD contains four hour-long shows: numbers 8, 19, 24, and 25. In the first two, Garland gamely tries to adapt her unique talent to the TV variety-show model, with weak skits and uncomfortable banter with guests. They include such bizarre sequences as Judy chatting about baseball with the late Leo Durocher (and singing a duet with him on "Take Me Out to the Ballgame"), performing with the bluegrass specialists the Dillards (who were forced to play the hayseeds, wearing suits, bowties--and bare feet), and acting in skits with comic Jack Carter. The latter two shows are for the true Garland lover: two hour-long network TV shows that essentially comprised solo concerts (with guest appearances by Vic Damone and the Robert Cole Trio), with Garland just standing there and selling the songs. The DVD also includes an audio track of the show's executive producer, film director Norman Jewison, sharing his memories of working with Garland, as well as outtakes from the shows. --Marshall Fine

A Brilliant, Incomparable artistI have watched only Episodes # 24 & # 25. These are full one-hour concerts. Judy is brilliant. Her control, power, showmanship, and artistry are overpowering. I'd like to mention how brave Judy was. CBS had forced her through some ridiculous TV show formats and wouldn't listen to her opinion. The result was a drop in viewers due to lousy writing, uneven shows with Judy supplying the few bright spots and terrible Neilsen ratings.CBS had already canceled the series. However, Judy and Executive Bill Colleran stood up to CBS and threw the ill-conceived format out and instituted the concert shows for the remained of the series. Judy was under great pressure...but she came through brilliantly, fought to keep the series going, and proved what had been missing from the shows.

From The Ridiculous To The Superb
Shows 24 and 25 are absolutely great! Show 19 has some charming moments. Skipping show 8 is probably a very wise choice to make. 24 and 25 really show Judy at her best. There's a "Kismet" medley that is a joy. No Garland fan should be without shows 24 and 25.

Good, But Not Greatest Of All Garland Shows
I liked this DVD very much. Except for the fact I bought it used and it took two weeks to come. But besides that the DVD was what you pretty much what you would expect out of the Great Judy. But I do have to admit Judy wasn't at the top of her game in episode #8. When she came out singing the opening number: "Alexander's Ragtime Band" she was very quiet and mumbling a lot through that song. As well through the rest of that episode she mumbled a lot especially while talking, aka: speaking to her guests. But besides the mumbling in episode #8 it was spectacular, and I enjoyed how Judy didn't just sings she did a couple of sketches with her guests. Episode # 19: Nothing bad about it that was so dreadful that needs to be put across. And last, the concert episodes: 24, and 25: They were absolutely the best! Judy sang some of the greatest songs like: "Lucky Day", "Sail Away", "Comes Once In A Lifetime", "Chicago", "Love", and many more! I really wish that when The Judy Garland Show was created it was just every episode of her in her concerts. If they didn't schedule her at the same time as Bonanza, the show would has been extremely popular. But, anyways, the DVD was splendid and absolutely recommended.

What can you say besides she was the best
I have had this DVD for sometime. Actually I love everything she does. But I wanted to say something about this one in particular because it really moves me. On episode 25 which was her next to last show everything she sings is saying goodbye. I guess it took me a while to realize that. Then towards the end of episode 24 she sings a duet with Vic Damone which is probably one of the best duets you'll every hear. That duet in and of itself is worth the price. Finally I will comment on her "Old Man River" song at the end of episode 25. She sings, and boy does she sing it, "I get weary and sick of trying, I'm tired of living but scared of dying, but Old Man River keeps on rolling along.

What have you missed?
I am not going to talk about show 24 and 25 since most of the reviewers here have given review for these two episodes. After watching this wonderful DVD, it really surprises me why most of the reviewers do not like show 8 and show 19. I have to agree some parts of these 2 shows are ridiculous such as Judy chat with Leo Durocher about baseball in show 8 and the performance by The Kirby Stone Four in show 19.In show 8, The Dillard, to me, is quite entertaining. Their "silly" faces and Judy awkward face put together made me laugh. "Side by side" performed by George Maharis and Judy was indeed quite beautiful. While watching this number, I almost shouted "Hey George! Stop hugging Judy so much!" How could CBS blame Judy for touching the guests too much? In this number, George Maharis was the one that could not get enough of Judy. The country songs medley was a real treat to me. Have you heard Judy sang country songs before? You got it from here. This number can also consider as rare as compare to other episodes because all the guests (Jack Carter and George Maharis), dancers, Jerry Van Dyke and Judy were performing together in this number in a beautiful setting. I have seen most of the episodes of this show. I don't think there were any other numbers like this one in other episodes. In show 19, the Kirby Stone Four was a disappointing one. As quartet, they did not have layers in their singing. All four of them sang in the same tone. Louis Jordan has a beautiful voice. I especially like his performance with Judy in children's songs medley. I never know "Popeye the sailor man" can be sung in such a beautiful way. Louis's performance in "Lulu" was heart-melting. You can see it from Judy's face while he was singing that song. This medley has outdone many other medleys in other episodes. If you do not like these two episodes before, watch them a few more times. I am sure you will find something that you have missed.

Tour de force
How fortunate we are to have these surviving video masters of America's finest entertainer. This woman could do anything and her talent had no limits. I was fortunate to meet Miss Garland's third husband Sid Luft about twelve years ago in a store and he was so kind to sit down and share personal memories of Judy with me. His eyes sparkled the entire time and I could see how very much in love he still was with her. I will never forget that day.
