Finding Gobi (Main edition): The True Story of a Little Dog and an Incredible Journey

Being a dog lover, it was a lovely story of a dog's allegiance to a runner from the UK. Of course, I cried, too, through parts of the book.

I love reading this book every minute I would recommend this to somebody that really likes to have a heartwarming story.

I like this dog very much and this is a man who needs a dog. That said... The author went into China after his dog ignorant and unprepared and, seemingly, lacking curiosity about the the country. So much of what he experienced would have been easier for him if he'd educated himself ahead, but he didn't really know where he was going when he arrived at the race. At the end, I'm very happy to say, he does know where he has been and that is the nature of real travel, I think. I ended up feeling that Gobi is one of the luckiest -- and most lovable -- dogs in the world, but her owner needs some work. Gobi is definitely up to the task. It's a strong story but the writing doesn't live up to it.

I had ardently followed Dion and Gobi's adventure on social media from the beginning. I read about their friendship, and then was gutted to learn that (SPOILER ALERT!0 that Gobi had gone missing. I was elated to learn a few weeks later that (SPOILER ALERT) that she'd been found. I eagerly anticipated each "pupdate" that Dion posted on You Tube detailing the arduous process to take Gobi to the UK. I was excited to learn that their story would be made into a book, but I figured that it would be a rehash of everything that I already knew. Still, I wanted to support Dion and Gobi, so I happily pre-ordered it. Boy, was I wrong! Turns out the story has more twists and turns than I had ever dreamed of. Even though I knew that the story had a happy ending, there is still genuine, stomach turning suspense in the book, as forces so much larger than a man and his dog come into the picture. I have even more admiration for Dion than I had when I started the book, as their journey was so much more difficult and complicated than he'd let on in his social media postings and interviews. If you're a dog lover, there are many parts of the book that will bring you to tears, but even if you're not, you will still enjoy it. It's a very well written, insightful book about endurance and perseverance in the face of obstacles. I have pre-ordered the picture book for my year old niece and nephew. I want them to grow up knowing all about Dion and GobI! Also can't wait for the movie version, hopefully to begin shooting next year.

I heard about this book and bought it without even sampling it. And I read it straight through. What an amazing life the author has had! And then this little dog walked into his life and turned it upside down in a good way. There's adventure, international intrigue, danger, awesome snd kind people who are all united by the plight of this little dog, and the author's dedication is so inspiring! This book is a reminder that there are some wonderful people in the world.

I have been following the Finding Gobi story since it first made it's way onto social media!! I was drawn in by the amazing bond that Dion and Gobi had made in such a short period of time. Dion was running a tremendous ultra marathon race in China when Gobi entered his life. She literally attached herself to his side and ran almost half of the race with him. What I love most about this story - and if you are an animal lover like me, I think that you'll agree - is that while Dion was racing, he still looked out for Gobi. It's incredible really! I mean, where did she come from? Why did she choose Dion? How in the world did she run half the race? Why had Dion decided to change his race strategy to help Gobi throughout the race? At what point during the race did Dion decide Gobi would be a part of his life always? I read this book in two days, I could not put it down. It's a story of a bond between Dion and Gobi....and after reading the book- I believe that this encounter was meant to be. Dion literally turned his whole entire world upside down to save this pup. I cried reading the book - partly because the story is so moving and I had been following it from the very beginning, but also because of what both Dion and Gobi had to endure. It's a story of love, dedication, and hope. I promise you that you won't be disappointed, it's a heartwarming story of a man and his best friend!!

Being a dog lover with a little rescue terrier similar in size and color to Gobi, I did enjoy the book and the author's commitment to bringing her home. As I finished the book, I held some reservations about the seemingly overwrought emotions he displayed, and extensive resources expended. A little over a year ago my son and daughter-in-law brought home their new little daughter, Mia Grace from China. Though 20 months old, she wore 9 months size clothing, was almost bald, and could not walk. Now just a year later, she is an energetic little toddler who is blossoming under the love of family and friends. I am happy for Deon and Gobi; I only wish there could be as much acclaim in bringing home orphaned, unwanted babies.

Although I can't imagine having a dog tag along on a very hot day long run without making sure it had water, I enjoyed the book. I learned things I never wanted to know about long distance running (or even short distance running) it was a good read. I'm glad it all turned out well and hope Gobi lived a long happy life, Thank you for writing it in a way that didn't criminalize all the Asian population for being born into a culture that is different from our own. But than again, we have some pretty apathetic and seriously nasty people in all countries.

One of the best love stories I have ever read. A great reading, not only for animal lovers. For those who still think that animals don’t have a soul.

So many feelings after reading this book. Suffice to say, it’s the very best book I’ve read in the last couple years, hands down. Like so many good books, I was introduced to it by an interview on CBC’s “The Current” with author Dion Leonard, and just had to rush out and buy it. This is not just a book about a cute dog, nor is it just a book about running long distances. Rather, it’s so much more: Dion’s beautiful prose fully captures his unimaginable and life-changing experience in the Gobi Desert, as a small stray dog befriends him, runs several marathons (!), and captures his heart. The books does such a beautiful job communicating the intense rewards of long distance running, the inseparable bond between humans and our dogs, the importance of perseverance and grit in the face of adversity, the meaning of family and love and togetherness, the camaraderie among those on a shared journey, the warmth and kindness of the Chinese people, and so much more. I recommend this book for any lover of dogs, running, relationships, and inspiring tales of perseverance and persistence. Enjoy!
