The one I purchased is not air-tight. I can easily press on the top and air goes out and then comes back in. Is this a defective one?

No, it is not a defective one. Although it says airtight lid, it does not have a rubber sealant or anything similar to make it "airtight". What keeps your paint workable is the wetness of the paper and sponge more than the lid. However, the lid helps conserve the moisture for a longer time.

if the paper dries does it need another hot water bath?

I spray it with a water bottle a few time while im on a big project. I also wash it out with the sink sprayer gently on hot. This allows me to reuse it several times.

does this work for oil painting?

Try storing it in the freezer with your oils, if your going to be leaving the paint for more than a couple of days. You can do this without the palette, but I don’t know how well it will work with the damp sponge and paper, which will both freeze. Work around with it, with freezer in mind, and see what works best. I haven’t used oils in years, and have never tested it with the wet palette, but i using a regular storage container worked well in the freezer. Keeps the oils fresh for days.

Can you use this palette paper for oil paint

Yes, I use the paper for oil paints and mediums. The paper palette is perfect for easy cleanup. I do not use the sponge when oil paints are in the palette. I close the lid to keep my paints pliable for days.
