After comparing several portable winches in the same category, I chose the RUGCEL 4500LB. It offers a well-balanced combination of price, features, and build quality, and the overall experience exceeded my expectations. Its biggest advantage is that it doesn’t require permanent installation—just store it in the trunk and take it out whenever needed. This makes it ideal for ATVs, UTVs, boat trailers, and equipment towing. The winch is housed in a durable toolbox, which makes carrying and storage very convenient. The synthetic rope runs smoothly with plenty of pulling power, fully meeting everyday towing needs in real-world use. The accessories are comprehensive, so it’s essentially ready to use right out of the box. Both the wired and wireless remote controls work very well, are easy to operate, and provide a strong sense of safety. Overall, this is a highly practical and reliable portable winch.

Product works as described. 1st use was to pull a Ford Ranger onto a U-Haul Xar Hauler double axle trailer. I lined up the trailer with the truck, connected the provided power cables to a 20’ long set of jumper cables to hook up to my F150s battery and then using the power button unreeled the hook and line. I made sure the wench was properly secured to the front of the trailer and began pulling the truck in neutral up onto the trailer. My son steered it while I controlled the wench. 1st use was a success. If I were to critique this product, I would say that the box that houses the winch needs to have more room inside to fit a 30 foot long set of jumper cables to power the wench from the front of a truck to the back where a trailer is… it comes with about 6’ which is way to short and not practical in my 1st use case…

I bought this to help load a few smaller cars onto my aluminum Featherlight trailer. I did not want to attach a permanent winch to it as It is fairly small and I am worried about theft. Instead I bought two 18" soft shackles that anchor the unit to my tow hitch when I am loading something. The hitch I have is adjustable and has 3 balls and 1 hook. With the orientation of my hitch the loop ends of the soft shackles go around one of the unused balls and the hook. The knotted ends of the shackles are anchored in behind the removable pins on the winch. I then set the winch and battery on my trailer box and put it to work. Quick and easy loading is now possible! It will be interesting to see how the winch pulls on a heavier load, but so far so good

I bought this mainly as a portable recovery option and it honestly exceeded expectations. The whole setup is well thought out — having the winch mounted in a toolbox with straps, shackles, and remotes makes it easy to store and deploy without permanently installing anything on the vehicle. What really impressed me is how practical it is. Instead of committing to a bumper-mounted winch, you can throw this in a truck bed or SUV and use it for multiple jobs — like getting something unstuck. The steel mounting plate and included recovery gear make it feel like a complete kit rather than just a bare winch. Overall, for a portable system it offers a great balance of convenience, pulling power, and versatility. If you want a winch you can use across different vehicles or projects without a permanent install, this is a surprisingly solid option.

This is a strong little winch, perfect for keeping in my service truck or throwing an SUV when heading to the mountains

The drum broke on first day and amazon refused to send replacement so i have to wait 30+ days for a return/refund process from seller before i can reorder a better winch; at this rate i will not try to reorder again as this was my third attempt at getting a winch from amazon that isn't too heavy/portable and works. I have explained to them i cannot wait that long as i had to wait over a month already for this one, and i need it for logging work. In the end it will be months of waiting for a return/replacement just to get a working winch, and I will not be ordering from amazon anymore after this; other than dumping my gift balance then closing my account.

Plastic cover top breaks off if you allow it to fold back flat. It stopped working when I pulled a heavy item and the gears locked up and would not release.

This winch was my top choice for a high quality portable winch that I thought would be able to connect to my 12V plug in the back of my SUV so that I could lift and lower my wheelchair to and from my car. I realized too late that the draw from the winch in operation would damage my car electrical circuit if I attempted to use it. Oop😳. No sooner than I had confirmed this and the winch had arrived at my door after only 1 day! I immediately requested a return which was approved although, of course I had to pay the $70 cost to return. I was impressed with all my dealings on the purchase and return of this item. Would recommend to anyone - doing business here was straightforward, timely and clear.

Well this is one item that did arrive and early. Have seen in use on YouTube. So was interested. Ideal for occasional use and actually can be used for other non vehicle rescue. Just need 12V battery.

It works OK, but not as delivered. I wanted this for my Lada Niva, as I often drive off-road and have been known to get stuck a few times. I didn’t want the built-in winch/bumper setups from Horn Tools that everyone seems to have here in Germany because they’re just not flexible enough for my needs. I’d like to be able to winch other things without having to use my car as the power source — but it should also be capable of connecting to the Lada and pulling me out when needed. It doesn’t. And why? Because of a simple and completely avoidable problem. The power cable supplied with the winch is too short. To winch my car out, I need to set it up as shown in the product video. However, the cable provided is nowhere near as long as the one shown in the video. Mine was only 160 cm long plus the battery clamps. I couldn’t connect the clamps to the battery and attach the winch to the car at the same time, which rendered it useless for vehicle recovery. I did attach the winch to a tree and tried pulling my trailer up the garden, and that worked very well — but only because the vehicle battery was parked right next to the winch. I contacted the supplier about the issue and informed them that many other people had made the same complaint. They showed little interest and simply suggested that I buy a longer power cable. I returned the winch immediately. Don’t buy this unless your battery is located right behind your bumper, because otherwise you won’t be able to power it from your vehicle battery.
