Yes, it absolutely works with power connected. However, don't expect much from AM/SW reception with it charging. As with even the $$$ radios, if you're listening to AM/SW and charging simultaneously, you'll pick up a ton of interference from the charging circuit and 5v source.

What size tf/sd card does it support, and is there a shuffle/random song mode or function??

Mini SD card with tf card that fits into it in order to load into computer. Don't think it has a shuffle mode. It plays books in chapter order. I would think songs the same way. Sound is great considering size.

How good is the reception on this radio?

Overall, the reception is good on all bands. When tuning AM and FM, keep in mind that the frequencies are close to each other on the dial . You will need to tune rather slowly to lock into your station of choice. SW is broken into different bands, so tuning is easier. It is a very sensitive receiver though. It is well worth the price.
