how to you know the device doing clone? and how do you know it finish?

The Red/Blue indicators will be flashing when clone processing. When the clone is done,the red indicator will be off, blue indicator will solid and then be off.

Is there an firrmware update for a 20TB drive? Is it even required?

If I remember correctly, 12 terabyte hard drive was the maximum. Is there a firmware upgrade? I'm not sure. I haven't researched it. I haven't had need to copy anything that large yet. Hope this helps.

does this work with Linux?

yup - works great - I use this dock with Linux (various distros) about 90% of the time.
