Honeywell Tech Support is Excellent
We recently purchased a new time clock that was supposedly compatible with existing time card systems as long as their scanners could emulate a computer keyboard to provide the data input. Unfortunately, while that was technically true, our new time clock, a TotalPass P600 made by Icon Time, wouldn't accept employee codes longer than 9 digits in length. As such, I decided to replace our barcode scanner with this one from Honeywell, as it would supposedly allow us to shorten the output from barcode scans to meet the needs of our new time clock.Unfortunately, programming barcode scanners is pretty unintuitive, and, despite my best efforts, I simply couldn't get this Honeywell barcode scanner to shorten UPC-A barcodes to just the last 6 digits. As such, I called Honeywell's tech support and spoke with Alex, telling him what I was trying to do and what I'd done up to that point in trying to get that done. He offered to place me on hold for a few minutes so he could generate a barcode for me that would program the barcode to do what I needed. When Alex returned from being on hold, an email popped into my email inbox, and Alex told me to reset the barcode scanner to its factory defaults as a precaution then to scan the barcode he provided me with. I did as he requested and tested the barcode scanner to find that it was outputting just the last 6 digits of each barcode as requested.Given how poor my experience was with Icon Time in setting up my time clock, I'm at least very pleased that Honeywell not only provided a product that worked as a workaround but also ensured its tech support staff could make the product do exactly what I needed it to do for somewhat of a fringe case. The scanner itself works great, though I do recommend shortening the time between good scans, as the default setting initially had me thinking the scanner was defective. It turns out the scanner was just not accepting scans for a short period after scanning a barcode, presumably to ensure a barcode didn't accidentally get scanned twice in quick succession.Anyway, if you need a good barcode reader, especially one that can shave off some of the digits in a code for you, then I highly recommend picking one of these up. If you have trouble getting it to do what you need, then simply call Honeywell's tech support, and I'm sure they'll be able to help you out.
