Q: Is this ok for ironing black shirts? or will it leave a white powder residue like magic sizing did?

It will leave the white powder residue. However, I take a single piece of linen (old pillow case or sheet) after I spray starch on the garment, lay the piece of linen over the garment and iron on the linen. It will keep the white residue from showing up on the garment. I also use the linen when ironing black jeans and it keeps them from having the white residue or shine on them from the iron.

Q: Is this the same formula as the yellow cap cans that are "faultless niagara original hold"?

I don't know about the formula but I know it works as well as the Niagara. I have used it in the past.

Q: Is this good for stiffening pants?

This starch will remove wrinkles and give your pants a nice feel. Your pants will hold a crease, but. They will not be stiff.

Q: Is this able to be used on polyster pants?

I do not have any polyester pants
