Does the mattress fold in with the frame or does it have to be stored separately?

Yes it folds up and can be stored inside the bed cabinet. We bought the recommended tri fold mattress to go with the cabinet bed. Fits perfect. I store the bed linens in the drawer. Works great in a guest room.
