Having read some reviews regarding retention of coffee fines in the base I was slightly off put having bought a Lelit espresso machine along with their flat tamper. Ats it dropped to £25 for the rippled PVD option i decided to give it a try. Was i disappointed? Absolutely not; i have been very impressed by the consistency in the tamp & the lack of fines retained in the ripples. Quite honestly i think i have wiped it twice in 6 weeks of daily use & not due to retention. Easy to set & use, weight is lighter that the Lelit & of the quality you would expect of Normcore. I was so impressed that i bought my son one & he has had no complaints either. Comes with a cover/stand & fits the Lelit/IMS baskets perfectly. Maybe those with retention issues are grinding a lot courser or the fines/base are/is damp? Like i say in the title a bargain for the price IMHO.

I have found this item to be very well made. 3 interchangeable springs for different pressures. very weighty. I could see the black coating may mark over time, but we will see. Priced well compared to other offerings.

For the money, this is by far the best route to go down if you're looking for a calibrated, self levelling tamper. It really does take a key step that could go wrong (puck levelling) out of the equasion with ease. Feels nice and weighty, and also relatively easy to push down to tamp using the pre-installed 25lb spring. For quite some time I've used a 30lb spring tamper but I actually feel the 25lb spring is not only easier and feels nicer to push down, but gives the same result as my 30lb calibrated tamper. Works perfectly dosing 18g in a standard 58mm portafilter basket. On a side note, if this spring had the audible 'click' and technology that's found on the "The Force Tamper" which retails at £170, this would literally take over the market. As it stands there's no built in audible click that'll tell you once you've hit your correct pressure. That said, once you compress the tamper down to tamp, you do hear an audible noise of sorts as the parts meet, and you can only tamp as far as the tamper lets you so as long as you're compressing all the way down, you know you're getting the pressure of whatever spring you've got installed. If you're not able to compress the tamper all the way down, it's likely you're dosing too much coffee into the basket.

I have read some reviews here that describe this as cheap and plastic. Neither are true. It’s a fully metal construction and is of a premium quality of materials and build. The tamper itself is a ridged type and solid metal. It has a range of springs included to set your own preferred tamping pressure. What is less talked about is the guaranteed perpendicular approach because of the fitment to the top inner of the portafilter basket. My personal issue which prompted my purchase wasn’t pressure but rather pressing at a slight angle, which caused over extraction of one edge of the coffee puck. This tamper from Normcore completely eliminates this as it fits level onto the top of the basket and sits slightly inside the basket to so the alignment is perfect. This combined with the spring of choice delivers exact, precise and repeatable tamping every time. Compared to other similar options I believe this to be a good value/quality prospect.

Bought cheap one and then forced to revert to this one. Works really good. Don't buy cheap ones like I did first

A good upgrade from the original supplied with the barista express, worth the money! Its got a few down sides: 1 the tamp can still provide a uneven tamp due to slight play in the levelling disc. 2 the so called 25lb and 30lb springs are not accurate. However this aside, its a well made tamp. As long as you are watching what your doing then you will tamp even. And the springs make no difference, you only need 15lb to tamp coffee anything higher will have the same effect, and although the springs are not exact they will provide a consistent tamp every time. And thats the key! There are better tamps for £150+ but for under £50 this is a great upgrade!
