Replacement for old guidelines
I was expecting a book that was the same as one that I have and that is falling to bits!! I was slightly disappointed but I must accept that it is by a different author and publisher. However, it is still useful for determining how a word should be used - or not. I am glad that I bought the book. it is good value for money and it is up to date - always a good idea. Yes, I would recommend the book for amateur/occasional writers.

A rubbish product!
I would say, this is a rubbish product. This is far from what the title of the book suggests. Frankly, I expected a much better tool. This book simply lets me down!

Usage not all that useful
Ditto my remarks on the Grammar and Spelling book- too small, too short. Alphabetical by subject is more appropriate in this area than G+S, but it's about an hour's read, with many vital warhorses left out. Give the man a decent size and page count (more than 195 in a package about the size of a smart phone) and he could really give the usage books out there a run for their money.
