Not for the uninitiated. Definitely professional grade.
Are you new to drinking fiber? Do you stick to the types that dissolve into nothing, or take psyllium capsules to avoid the experience altogether? Well, this product will likely prove too advanced for your sensibilities. This is for real men and women who understand that the ends justify the means in the fiber world. Not sure into which category you fall? Continue reading. So, like many folks in fiberdom, I've typically used Metamucil in the past. Having completely gone through my stockpile of the orange-flavored sugar-free stuff, I decided to go back to what Metamucil refers to as the unflavored "coarse texture", which is what I used to take years ago. While not as easy to drink, it was a true power house, if you know what I mean. In looking for it this time, though, I noticed it has added sugar. Really? I don't know why they feel the need to sweeten something unflavored, especially when psyllium isn't bitter. Well, not wanting the unnecessary empty carbs, I decided to try something altogether new. Hence, I looked at all the whole husk psyllium options and settled on Now, given both the reviews and my positive history with the brand. To go back a little further, I started taking fiber over 20 years ago when I was working out all the time and eating on a high-protein diet. Needless to say, fiber made my time in the bathroom much more pleasant. It was then I quickly learned that dosing a 12oz glass of water and taking your time to stir it well led to something that I really didn't want to drink. You basically get a glass of swelled, nearly-flavorless sludge that you have to chug down. It didn't take long before I put a double dose into a rocks glass, stirred just enough to integrate, chugged immediately, and chased with plenty of water. (This method, while much less painless, is apparently not recommended due to it being a "choking hazard". Don't really see how you could choke, but to each their own.) Having said all that, my first experience with the Now whole-husk was fairly close to what I remembered from Metamucil's original unflavored coarse texture. I put a heaping tablespoon into a rocks glass and stirred quickly. It clumped a bit at first, almost like the stuff was hydrophobic. It ingrated quickly enough, though, and I tossed it back immediately. Yeah, I remember this taste. It has that kind of nondescript, bland cereal thing going on. While scoring quite low on the yummy-meter, it's not necessarily unpleasant, either. I then chased it with a big glass of water, swishing well to get the grit out of my teeth, refilled the glass, and left it in the sink. (Pro tip: Any "grit" left in an empty glass will dry and stick like little bits of concrete. I let the glass sit with water in it allowing any remaining fiber bits to swell, and then go back to wash it after.) Ok, at this point I've taken my first dose, so the only thing to do now is wait. Like I said at the begining, when it comes to fiber, the ends justify the means. For those that don't know, the "ends" I'm referring to is an oddly satisfying, quite large, and very clean poop. (If you know, you know.) Well, fast-forward to the next morning, and I'm eventually greeted by that all-too-familar "oh damn, it's that time" feeling. (Know what I mean, Vern?) So I sit down, give one long, relatively easy push, and viola. Done. The monster I left behind me was not angry. It had no teeth. It was simply a very polite gentle giant that was more than happy to incorporate all the rowdy characters in my bowels and exit the party with them in a very considerate manner. Such a gentleman. For those of you who have never taken "coarse" or whole-husk psyllium, it is far more effective then the fine-textured stuff. Is it a little less fun to take? Perhaps. Is the experience worth it, though? Oh yes, my friend. If you're not sure, go ahead and give it a shot anyway. A pound of this stuff is very reasonably priced, and it's well worth trying out. If you're an old pro like me, this is a no-brainer. Happy gut, happy butt. What more could you ask for in such a fiercely fearless fibrous friend? Not much as far as I'm concerned. We're biffles for sure, and if this were the days of MySpace, he'd definitely be in my Top 8. ***Oh, and if you are new to fiber, make sure you do your research on how it can impede the effectiveness of supplements and medications, if taken too close together. I usually take my vitamins and evening medications immediately before or after dinner, and then I take fiber right before bed. If I'm watching my weight, I'll sometimes take fiber before dinner, in which case I wait until I go to bed to take my vitamins and meds. If you're just just taking a few psyllium caps, this isn't an issue. If you're taking a full dose of whole-husk/powdered and mixing it with water, though, you need to keep tining in mind.

Excellent Psyllium Husks That Really Work
If you're looking for a simple and effective way to boost your fiber intake, this NOW Foods Whole Psyllium Husks product is an excellent choice. The quality is top-notch, and it's highly effective for anyone needing to increase their daily fiber, especially to help with constipation. Unlike other products, this one is gentle on the stomach and doesn't cause cramps, as long as you start with a small amount and gradually increase it. Mixing and Taste Mixing it is simple. The husks have a light, natural tan color, which shows that the product is pure and free from any artificial dyes. I find that 1 tablespoon per 12 oz glass of water is the perfect ratio for a smooth, drinkable texture. Any more psyllium, and it gets too thick for my liking. While the taste is relatively neutral, the key to making it pleasant is to use enough water. I always mix it and let it sit for a couple of minutes to let the husks fully hydrate. This simple step makes a big difference. A Must-Have for Travelers I especially appreciate that it comes in a bag. At home, I transfer it to an airtight container, but the bag is incredibly convenient for travel. It doesn't take up much space or add bulk to my luggage, which is a huge bonus compared to bulky plastic bottles. As someone who travels often, I always pack this. It's a lifesaver for the digestive discomfort that can come from eating different foods or even fast food on the road. Crucial Health Tip: Drink Plenty of Water! This is the most important part: you must drink enough water. Psyllium is a soluble fiber that absorbs water and forms a gel, so it needs plenty of fluids to move through your digestive system smoothly. My doctor recommended drinking one full glass of water with the psyllium, and then another full glass right after. This helps prevent dehydration and potential intestinal obstruction. Overall This is a fantastic product that offers excellent quality and is a great value for the price. It's effective, easy to use, and incredibly convenient for my lifestyle. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a reliable fiber supplement.

A Balanced Approach
When adding this product to your diet, ask yourself why you want to increase your fibre intake. While fibre is beneficial, identifying your specific goals is crucial. If your aim is to promote regular bowel movements, this product can help, but remember that adequate water intake is vital for digestion. Staying hydrated not only aids digestion but also enhances the effectiveness of the fibre. For those seeking weight loss, consider your motivationโlikely for better health. A balanced diet is essential for this goal, and knowing your reasons will ensure safer use. Start with a small amount, ideally not exceeding two tablespoons, and adjust based on comfort. Using smaller amounts means youโll buy it less often, which can help with costs. Additionally, starting small allows you to monitor how your body reacts, ensuring a smoother transition. Fibre needs water for effectiveness. Insufficient hydration can cause complications, while overconsumption may harm your digestive system. Drinking water regularly can also help you feel fuller, supporting your weight loss efforts. This product can be effective if used as directed and with proper hydration. Changes in your digestive health will take time, so patience is important. If your reasons for using this product are unclear, dissatisfaction may follow, as some reviews indicate. Regarding taste, donโt expect anything deliciousโafter all, itโs psyllium husks. However, it blends well with smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal to mask the flavor. Mixing it with other foods can also enhance your overall nutrient intake. This product does not require excessive caution but does call for consistency and moderation. I have enjoyed using it and plan to continue purchasing it.

I'm much healthier-
This stuff is great. Last year I got sick twice where I was in tons of pain. I was stopped up. I went to the bathroom once a day, but didn't realize I needed to go more. The first time I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital. I went to a clinic, and my stomach was in so much pain. I was thinking kidneys, maybe a gall stone, or something along those lines. They took X-rays, and said I was lucky it was nothing major. At least not yet. I was just stopped up. They told me to try a laxative, and fortunately that worked. It worked for awhile I should say. The thing with a laxative is ya have to be near a toilet. So ya really can't go anywhere. Hence I stopped using it. Then I got sick again. Similar to the first time, but this time the laxative didn't work. The doctor suggested this. This took a few days to kick in, but once it did it was great. I started going to the bathroom 5-6 times a day. That's a good thing in that it's cleaning all the manure out of your system. Then as time goes on, I dropped to going 2-4 times a day. The nice thing about this is that when ya have to go, it's not a sudden thing where ya need to run to the bathroom. It's a lot slower process. So if you're out somewhere, ya realize ya have an hour or two.

Great buy!
Pretty good and cost effective. Organic and easy to take with water and milk. Would recommend, definitely in budget based other alternatives Ive seen on Amazon. No specific taste when you swallow. Texture is just like any other you will get from market. Pretty effective for gut health.

Recommended!
Iโve been using NOW Foods Whole Psyllium Husks for a few weeks, and itโs become part of my daily routine. It mixes thick and slightly grainy, but thatโs typical for psyllium huskโjust stir and drink quickly. Iโve noticed better digestion, improved regularity, and it helps keep me fuller between meals. The mild taste makes it easy to add to smoothies or juice, and the large container is a great value. Overall, a reliable and effective fiber supplement Iโd definitely recommend. But do your research so that you are taking it at times not to impact medications.

Read for better resultsโฆ
I started my journey with Sugar free Metamucil, and that was fine. I really hated the orange taste and ingredients. I was looking for something more pure in form. I decided to try it plain and I trust Now Brand from previous experience with the company, so I went with the large jug of it. Things to know about Psyllium Husk. It swells extremely fast. The directions say to do 2 tablespoons in 12oz of water. Thatโs impossible to chug before it gels up. If youโre having that issue, I tried doing 6 oz water, 1 tablespoon and I shake it up in a lidded bottle, chug. I was getting heartburn so bad and upon further investigation itโs bc I needed a chaser of 6 oz of water right after bc it wasnโt in my stomach, it was stuck 1/2 way down. Anyways, try doing this product like this. I havenโt had any issues since doing the chaser of water and I feel great. Taste: if you love grits, itโs very similar. I like them and this product makes me look forward to taking it bc of how I feel and knowing itโs not filled with fake sugar, and bad ingredients. Now Foods nailed this product and Iโm happy I decided to look outside the box of mainstream big store alternatives. Obviously, for results, youโll poop and it swells. What youโre not hearing is the effects it has on your gut microbiom. It corrects your stomach flora. I had a blood test done for my cholesterol levels and I was within normal range and my doctor for sure thought I was not going to be. Ha ha! Jokes on him bc Iโve been taking this for 2 weeks before the test and Iโm sure that corrected my levels. I feel good, and think I am less bloated. These products are trial and error. Research on YouTube for ways to make this work for you bc itโs a helpful and healthy. My research found I wasnโt using enough water at the end. Take 1/2 hr before you eat and youโll consume less. Iโm a fan of the psyllium husk by Now!

Cheapest psyllium husk out there and also no sugar
I've looked everywhere for the cheapest psyllium husk brand out there and this brand is it. It is pure plain psyllium husk without any of the additives like sugar, which is great (Metamucil is like 50% sugar by weight!?). I'm trying to be more healthy out here, not take like 50% of my daily sugar intake from my fiber supplement... That said, the taste and texture of this is not great. You definitely have to finish it within seconds of stirring, otherwise it gels up into a nasty mush that tastes like cardboard and is hard to swallow. If there's one takeaway from my review, it's to drink this ASAP before it gels up. Here are my tips for making this bearable - 1. Avoid mixing with hot liquids. The warmer it is, the quicker the psyllium husk gels up with the liquid. 2. After adding your liquid, give it a small stir and immediately start chugging. Do NOT stir it all the way like you would with any other powdered drink. As soon as you add water, the clock starts ticking for when it gels up. When it gels up, you can no longer drink it and instead you have to eat it like shredded cardboard. This also means to not "savor" the drink. Just chug/gulp it down it like you would with liquid medicine. Have it spend as little time in your mouth as possible. Mouth = warmth = gel 3. I've noticed that at this step when I start chugging it, lots of the psyllium husk starts to sink/bunch up at the bottom of the cup where it starts to form a mass/gel up. I've been able to counteract this by using a spoon to gently stir up the drink as I'm chugging it. If you master this, it'll just be like chugging a slightly earthy/grainy tea (like a teabag ripped open or something) instead of having to scoop out and eat the gel cardboard it can be. It'll look dumb, but I swear by this method. I would not take psyllium husk any other way: Pill form - too little psyllium husk per pill. Can't reach the psyllium husk intake you can with the husk/powder version. Also more expensive by weight With sweeteners - would rather avoid unneeded sugar, not to mention it makes no sense to pay for psyllium husk and for half the weight to just be sweetener. If you follow the above, you won't even need any sweeteners because you're just chugging it down without tasting it
