First Alert 10-Year Battery Smoke Alarm | SMI110

1 of the 5 I purchased didn't work. I found out the hard way that there is a NO RETURN policy on these smoke detectors. There is a yellow tab that you have to pull on and remove to activate these smoke detectors. After fooling around with it for awhile, I discovered that the mechanism associated with this pull tab did not activate the detector. I pushed and tapped on the mechanism, and finally got the satisfying CHIRP. It now works. So if you find that one of your smoke detectors does not activate, play around with those plastic pieces where the yellow tab was located.

Some of the people giving 1-star are not reading the instructions. The smoke detector will not activate until: 1. You pull and remove the yellow tab, AND 2. You twist and install it into the mount assembly I think people are trying to press "test" before it's installed and assuming they don't work. I ordered 4, and all of them worked once installed. Also, they were manufactured very fresh, I think only 2 months ago from the time that I ordered which is great. Comes with the mount for the ceiling as well as the screws you will need. Don't use previous mounts because it might not be compatible, and you NEED the mount because thats also what activates the alarm. THE TEST BUTTON WILL NOT WORK BEFORE INSTALLATION! To be clear, the battery in these is non-removable. It has an internal battery and when it dies, you replace the entire unit. Modern units nowadays have an end-of-life alarm at 7-10 years anyways, so this is fine. Totally worth the couple of dollars more not to have to change 9V batteries every few years. I believe this version of the unit are NOT interconnected with each other, and they are NOT hard wired either. I dont mind because the battery lasts 10 years so I dont see why hardwiring is required. I just tucked my power wires above into the ceiling.

I purchased this smoke alarm because I wanted the peace of mind that comes with a reliable safety device. Unfortunately, it failed immediately. As soon as we installed it, the alarm sounded continuously and could not be silenced, despite following the manufacturer’s instructions. It was clearly defective right out of the box. What made the experience even worse was discovering that I couldn’t easily obtain a replacement or a refund. A smoke alarm isn’t a luxury item—it’s a critical life safety device. When a product arrives defective, customers should not be left without protection or forced to spend additional time and money finding another option. I had to remove the defective unit and purchase a different brand to ensure my home was protected. Based on both the product failure and the lack of customer support, I cannot recommend this smoke alarm.

Easy to install, works well, alarm is loud

This a bare bones, stand-alone smoke detector. Does not even have an AC/whole-house connector, which I though was standard on all models these days. Just a sealed battery that cannot be replaced. It is supposed to last 10 years. If so, that may be longer than the smoke detector is actually functional. That's because most modern smoke detectors (including this one) now have a "malfunction/replace" failure code. They beep because they are worn out, not because the battery is dead. (yes, they do wear out) In my experience, that failure occurs in 7-8 years, regardless of the cost or sophistication of the detector. So you might as well go cheap and buy this one. A good choice if replacing an earlier similar First Alert model, since you can use existing base, which speeds installation. Just twist it onto the existing base. Just be aware it will not trigger other detectors in your house if there is smoke, since it cannot connect to such a system.

These alarms are no maintenance. 10 year sealed battery, so no chirping. If you happen to have an Apple HomePod in the house, you’ll get realtime alerts to your smart phone! 👍🏻

Works easy install, think it doesn't work just put on bracket and it will

Frustrated - we ordered 2 of these, one worked and one did not turn on / work when we tried to test it. I requested a refund and ordered a replacement (so the third one) and it did not work either. We followed the instructions - it did not sound when we tried to test it just like the other one in the first order. They are sealed with a supposed 10-year battery, which makes it so we cannot try and change the battery or troubleshoot at all. It is just more trash now and we still don't have the second working smoke alarm we need. Hesitant to try another one by this brand.
