You don't get to play with most pieces of art; most investments aren't also useful tools; and most tools aren't very interesting to collect. The first time you buy a $100 knife you feel guilty and a bit foolish, but before you find yourself considering a $500 blade and thinking, "what a steal!" And sometimes that's genuinely the case: I paid exactly $500 for my ZT 0888 just a few years ago. It has appreciated a quite nicely.

Q: Is this knife superior to Benchmade Griptilian?

While the Griptilian is a fantastic knife, I would say this is a better knife. The ZT 462 boasts an upgraded steel(CPM 20 CV vs.CPM S30V) , with a longer blade (3.7 " with a 4" cutting edge vs 3.45 on the Griptilian), carbon fiber and titanium scales (vs. g10 or nylon with the Griptilian). The one thing the Benchmade will offer you is the lifesharp guarantee. Both are excellent knives, in my opinion, the ZT is an upgrade.

Q: Can this auto-deploy from a pocket as you are pulling it out?

No, you would be looking for an Emerson wave, they catch on the pocket and come out open

Q: What can I put on the scales to protect the carbon fiber that won't break down the resin? - preferably to increase, or at least not decrease the grip.

I've been carrying mine daily for the past 2'ish years and don't notice any problems with the carbon fiber. It is in a pocket that has my keys and a second Sig Sauer magazine on occasion.
