Audi Preferred and Budget-Friendly
I’ve been using this oil exclusively in my 2015 Audi Q7 Sport Edition for almost 8 years, and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s the same oil Audi prefers for their engines, so I know I’m giving my vehicle exactly what it was designed for. Even after all these years, my engine runs smooth, strong, and clean—never a hiccup. What really makes this a no-brainer is the price. Compared to what dealerships charge, it’s an absolute steal. I’ve also priced out other high-quality brands, and none of them come close to the cost-performance ratio of this one. For what you pay, the quality is unbeatable. Oil changes can be a pain, but knowing I’m using the right oil at a fraction of the price takes the sting out of it. I usually buy in bulk to save even more, and the consistency in quality across every bottle has been rock solid. Whether you’re driving an Audi or another European car that calls for this spec, this oil just works. No guesswork, no surprises. It’s the kind of reliability you stick with and clearly, I have.

Better Running Engine and Long Drain Capable
There were three major reasons I chose this oil. First it is robust. It has to be. It has MB-Approval 229.5 and this means it can be drained in typical European fashion which is up to 32,000km (20,00 miles) or 3 years, when the engine is gas and it looks like 1 year or 10,000 miles for diesel, provided the vehicle is setup properly for it and the driving conditions are at their most favorable. Second, it has has a favorable price point in the 5 quart size. Thirdly, it is just as capable of longer drain intervals whether used in a gas or diesel engine, provided the engine is set up for it. My engines, one gas and one diesel, are not set up with oil condition monitoring so I will be guided by good judgement and lab results as to change interval. After I put it in the diesel two unexpected benefits became obvious. The engine, a Mercedes Benz 3.0 turbo diesel, ran much more quietly. By this I mean mechanical noises. Combustion noise in that engine, as heard from inside the car is modest at idle and drops too low to notice just above idle. But to not hear engine mechanical sounds from inside car at all rpm's and loads, immediately following the oil change and staying this way in the weeks to follow, is very impressive. The other benefit is a noticeably smoother idle. I have been doing my own oil changes for just over 40 years and this oil is the best one yet. 31 May 2020 Update: I have been running this in the diesel (85 Mercedes 300D) 21 months now. The internal mechanical noises not only went away right after the first oil change with this oil but also stayed away during the entire use interval of 5528 miles to the next oil change a year later. This was a first!! I had noticed, one oil change after another, using various brands of diesel HDEO oils for 15 years, the mechanical noise of the engine would go away after changes only to gradually return in about 2000 miles or so. Another plus came from this being a 0W-40. I noticed that the sound of starter is utterly the same year round now. Cranking as low as -10F sounds like cranking any other day. Nice to think of saving stress on the old starter. Conversely, idle oil pressure, once warmed up, behaves just as it did with 5W-40 before.

Good value arrived in one piece
I was skeptical about buying oil from amazon as I’ve had experiences in the past of items breaking inside of the box and I envisioned arriving home to find boxes containing 2 gallons of motor oil sitting up side down in my driveway with a broken caps soaking into my concrete. I bought these because they had a promotion coupon on them, making it cheaper then the parts store, with the fact that Amazon delivers it to top it off. They arrived neatly packed, boxed securely and in individually inside heat sealed plastic bags. No broken bottles. I was impressed. I have noticed that amazon has gotten much better about packing things that might spill or break. Other than the lack of any dramatic arrival of the oil I don’t know what else to say. It seems to be doing its job, as my engine hasn’t seized up yet. Just kidding. It’s a pretty good oil, I’d personally prefer Mobil-1 over almost any other oil (except AmesOil or Royal Purple-but those will run you about $8-12/ a quart). But that’s strictly my opinion. Like I said I gave this a try because it was significantly cheeper than going to the parts store. In reality in most circumstances oils are pretty similar, apart from the weight and being conventional or synthetic. It’s mostly personal bias. In short: I would recommend buying this oil from amazon 👍🏻

Nearly 2.5 or 3 years later. Still great for my 2014 Jetta S (Base 2L, 4 cylinder)
EDIT: My 2014 2L 4Cylinder Basic Jetta S still works fine with this oil brand nearly 3 years later, or 2.5 years later, not sure I think I switched to it April 2016. Yes it is a different rating than the OEM but seems to perform all the same. Other people say it performs better than stock. I really don't know about that. I just know it runs well, doesn't burn with time, although the car is still basically new-ish, so it shouldn't burn oil anyways. I am happy with it, saved me dealer cost. And I found the real OEM filter for the car for like 8 bucks on Amazon. Pretty cheap oil change all in all. Original review: I used this oil about a year. I am 28 and I drive my vehicle hard so for me I am really getting my moneys worth...actually saving money here by skipping the stealership OEM oil. VW recommends 5W-40 (or at least 5W-30) BUT This 0W-40 is supposedly better with higher quality chemicals and is a thinner weight on start yet maintains that thick 40 rating at hot temps. I did notice the car doesn't seem to struggle when it's ultra cold out and starting it the first time that morning. It just rolls the engine right away. I can only assume that's because of the thin 0W cold winter rating.

Did not appear to Burn or Darken @6k Miles.
Purchased and Used as Recommended by Manufacturer as OEM Quality Oil. This Product resulted in a Louder Engine and what felt like more Internal Friction, compared to the Valvoline from the Previous Oil Cycle. This Castrol Edge Euro was also used with STP Ceramic Treatment, which should have and did add some additional Lubricity to the Viscosity of this Oil. However, there was a Noticeable difference between the Previous Oil and this Oil. The Engine did not seem to be as smooth when Driving at Highway Speeds and overall the Engine was Louder. There was an Engine Flush prior to the Oil Change and the Oil appeared Clear or Clean, throughout the Oil Cycle with this Oil, even though the Viscosity or Surface Friction did seem to be Greater with this Oil. Despite Audi OEM Notoriety of Castrol Edge Euro Formulas, personally this Oil will not be on the List of Oils to Use in Future Oil Changes. Other Castrol Viscosity Weights maybe suited for other Vehicles, however this Product will not be used in my Vehicle going forward. After doing another Engine Flush and Refilling with Mobil 1 Euro, the Engine was almost Immediately Quieter and the Vehicle would appear to be Performing much Better with the Mobil Synthetic, compared to this Castrol Synthetic. The Edge Euro did not appear to have Break Down, over the Use of the Product, it did not Burn, Blacken, or even much show Wear, when looking at the Dipstick. However, it did seem that this was a Lower Quality Oil than that of the Valvoline this Replaced and when compared to the Mobil 1 Euro Now in Use. Where again, there was also 15oz of STP Ceramic Treatment added with this Oil, where it is surprising that the Oil still did seem to not perform as well as the Mobil 1 and/or Valvoline. I did read that this was (Castrol Edge Euro) a Group III Base Oil, where as the Valvoline and Mobil 1 Euro Oils were both a Group IV Base Oil and it would appear that that is Remarkable in Comparison between such Oils, with regards to Performance. Which again, Group IV Base Oil will be the Standard Oil which will be Used in My Vehicle going Forward. This Castrol Edge Euro was not in Less Expensive than the Other Euro Options Mentioned, despite the Lower Group III Ranking. However, this does state to meet "OEM Standards", when Servicing VW/Audi Vehicles. Not much else is known about this Product. Quality, would Provide 3 Stars, though because it did not appear to Burn or Darken, am Providing 4 Stars. Did use this in the Winter Months, definitely would not use this Oil in Summer Months. Would expect this to be much Thinner and Perform worse in Summer, under Warmer Driving Conditions. Again, this was used with a Ceramic Additive @10% Total Capacity.
