Kid Who Climbed Everest: The Incredible Story Of A 23-Year-Old's Summit Of Mt. Everest

One Of The Best Books About Mt. Everest....
...and I've read them all. All the others are pretty much the same but Bear really goes into the "misery minutia" of the entire ordeal: from friends urinating into a bottle just inches from your head in an overcrowded tent, to no privacy for essential such as defecation. There are many close calls Bear had and this makes this book hard to put down. I read in in 5 days, could have read it in 2 but made it last. He heavily details the misery of being up at Camp 2 and beyond. Bear never talks of "assaulting" this mountain as other authors have. I believe it was Jon Krakauer who said "You don't assault this mountain. You sneak up on it." He was extremely fit and yet the mountain knocked him on his ass more than once. You see how fit climbers die on this mountain or never summit at all, then you read about the extremely narcissistic Canadian Japanese woman who decided she wanted to climb Everest. Having never been about 1,000 ft, she found a new Nepalese Guide co. to take her up. They regarded her as not strong enough, she didn't know what crampons were nor how to use them. She posed for endless photos at Base Camp. Incredibly, she summitted (I climb 14k mountains and sometimes will usurps ability )but spent so much time at the summit again posing, she had nothing left. She died on the mountain. I think the great mountain frowns on narcissism or arrogance. If you're thinking of climbing Everest, check out this book for an in depth report of the misery that awaits you. There were a lot of typos and wrong words used (suite instead of suit) but it's well written and one hell of a read.

Wow, Bear is an amazing person.
This book is written very well, and gives an amazing account. I've seen umpteen Everest movies, but Bear provides a detailed perspective that is unmatched.

Great Book, a must read!
Let me start by saying I thought this book was excellent. I've read about all there is when it comes to Everest and this is not your typical Everest book. Bear, best known in America for the TV show Man vs. Wild, does an excellent job bringing you into his climb of the worlds highest peak. What the "other" Everest books always seemed to lack, in hindsight, was humor, something this book has no shortage of. Probably one of the most interesting and favorite parts of the book for me were his descriptions of the mountain. He does a great job painting the picture of what he sees, something I've always thought the big name Everest writers have lacked. His descriptions of the view (top to bottom) and the western Cwm/South Col really helped me envision a place I will likely never see. Bear is a storyteller and it shows in this book. As I said before, I found the humor a pleasant surprise and I found myself laughing out loud on numerous occasions. But Bear also knew how to bring the book to a serious point when the story called for it. His story is amazing and inspiring. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Kid who climbed Everest
The author writes in a way that you end up climbing every painful step of the journey to the top of the world. I felt the emotions, the cold, the wind, the struggle for air, the fear, etc at his expense. If you like Mt climbing stories, this one is a must.

Captivating and Inspiring
I felt like I was on the icy cold journey while reading this book. I was even shivering because it is so detailed. The book inspired me to work harder because I truly have it easy. It also motivated me in my faith. Thank you!

Good Everest Account
This account of Grylls' climb is interesting and captivates the reader who is interested in adventure mountaineering. Reading this book coupled with watching Everest Beyond the Limit Reality TV series helped give me an appreciation of the mountain and the difficulties that it presents to climbers. Grylls has a casual tone that guides the reader on a exciting trek up the biggest mountain in the world. This made an excellent vacation read for me. Recommended.

Great quick motivational read
Great book and very motivational. Not many people know about Bear's background and early times before he got his own show and this book shines a bit of light into it. It's an easy read and not boring. While it's not a motivational book of that sort I felt like I could take on the world after reading it.

Not exactly literature, but a good account of what goes into the effort of climbing Everest.
Not the best writing (whoever edited it was asleep a lot of the time, as there were grammatical and spelling errors throughout) HOWEVER, I found the details of the experience fascinating, as I always do when it comes to stories about climbing Everest. I will read every book on the subject to continue to convince myself that I NEVER want to do it myself!

Bear essential
A remarkable story, honestly and engagingly told.He brings expedition life into vivid focus and effortlessly captures the elation and heartache of such a strenuous and demanding climb – a feat made all the more poignant because of his youth and recently mended broken back.I have only seen his work on TV before, but this proves he can write as well as he can present.
